Trying to do some work on my Automatic transmission to determine why it's not shifting properly. I pulled the governor cap off and trans fluid spilled out. The governor itself is covered in trans fluid.
This doesn't look normal, is it or is the inner seal bad?

trans fluid is supposed to be in there.
it is lubricated by the ATF and is one reason these (can) fail when coasting down Mtn passes or Towing with wheels on ground and engine off.
make sure that the flyweights, little springs and check balls move
you can pull it out, it's not critical in any timing sort of fashion.
make sure there isn't some debris clogging the small orifices that the check balls seal against. _________________

If that ATF smells of gear oil it would be concerning as the purpose of that small seal is to keep the ATF and the gear oil separate. Mixing in the transmission can mean very bad things.
I hope for your sake that you fair better than me, but I had mixing of fluids in mine and it destroyed my transmission. First thing I noticed was slipping between 2nd and 3rd.
But as Dan said, transmission fluid in the governor housing is completely normal. _________________ <<Tyler>>

When cold it slips in reverse and doesn't like to shift into second from first. When it is warm it takes high rpms to get it into third which is causing me to fail my Smog test here in Los Angeles. I've pulled the valve body to clean out the gunk.
So far the valves that I've pulled look to be in good shape. a little wear on the separator plate where the three ball bearings reside.
I'm thinking the seals on the piston need to be replaced. I read your build up and similar problem.
Where did you get the replacement seals for the piston?
This is a trans that hasn't been used in over five years. Mileage is 143K. |

Here's the separator plate wear. Looks like someone else tried to remove some of the metal.

I had that, I "fixed it" and then ordered a brand new valve body from Germany which changed absolutely nothing.
I still have the fixed valve body.
My problem was hard rubber seals on the Second gear piston.
Remeber, it is an Audi transmission at its basic core, there are thousands and thousands of them running around still.

I'm betting the seals on my piston will need to be replaced also.
What fluid did you use? I've read here that Type F is the best for these transmissions.

Type F is not specified by VW, but a few members have reported firmer shifts on used automatics. _________________ ☮️ |

If you end up in need of valve body parts, let me know. I decided to use the Audi 5000 valve body on mine, so I have the Vanagon vb still. Unsure what parts are good. |
Thanks for the offer. Only wear i've found on the valve body parts is on the separator plate shown above. If yours is in good condition I would definitely be interested. |

Pretty sure it's good. I'll take some pictures. _________________ <<Tyler>>

I found a major reason why the van wasn't shifting properly. Check out this seal!
Totally flattened
Luckily I previously bought a seal set from Busdepot that has replacement seals for the piston and governor cover!
Now, should I trust the circlip on the end of the shaft? It has lasted all these years... |

Damn. The seals for the piston in my set are the wrong size. The outer o-rings are the right ones but the seals for the inner piston are way off.
Anyone know where I can get the right seals for the piston? |

Just noticed. The reason the seal failed was that it was installed backwards. I suspected that someone had done some work on this trans. Hopefully nothing else is backwards as well... |
