Just got my electric bill and there was an add inside for a "Sengled Boost LED bulb with built-in Wi-Fi repeater".
It provides:
*Extend your Wi-Fi network (2.4 Ghz only) up to 100 feet
*Dimmable LED light bulbs

At just $29.99 you can improve dropped connections, slow download speeds and dead zones in your home-basement, patio, and more.

I'm no computer guy but my "mancave" is in my basement and the signal at times cuts out. The router is upstairs at the opposite corner of the house. Is this something worthwhile? Is there something better without costing a bunch? I have no idea what 2.4Ghz is so put it in laymans terms that I can understand.

2.4 Ghz is the wireless band frequency.

In my NJ house I ran a Cat 5e wire to my garage and into an additional router to strengthen the WiFi signal. I use Apple Airports which do this easily, but alas are abandoned orphans now.

In my Pa house, well you've seen it...... no extenders are neccessary at all!! Wink

Does it work?
Probably
I can't imagine MetEd selling them if it doesn't.

I haven't been out for a few weeks so haven't opened my bill to see the ad.

I would have concerns on the speed of the repeated signal though.
You may get a strong signal but it could be frustratingly slow.

Edit: just found it online, reviews aren't good.

I'd suggest a dedicated WFi range extender instead.

I did the same for my garage old laptop. Ya the weefee signal was Ok but why not hard wire it. Not drops in signal or anything like that.
Suggest is to run a cat 5 or cat 5e line to your basement from the router. Simple to do.

You can get a nice range extender for a few bucks cheaper than the bulbs, ex - https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-N300-Range-Extender-EX2700/dp/B00L0YLRUW/
The top review on that one gives a quick tutorial on setup - https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R2L3CYCV772S0X/
They're making these things super easy to use.

If you don't mind running a cable that would give you the best speed and reliability, but the $25 range extender is an easy button.

What powers it when you turn the light off?

I bought a under $30 range extender for my synagogue to provide coverage to a far off corner. Took less than 2 minutes to configure.

Nothing.

Therein lies a major problem. You must leave the light on 24/7.
You can however turn the light on and off via an App...... ONLY via the App.
