Helped my buddy extract his one ton chevy dump/plow truck from off road this morning. Used my old gmc 2500 , two logging chains and an old tire between the chains. Yanking back worked great. Some how the tire is able to cushion the force , yet seemed to multiply it as well. Not sure how , but i am convinced of the method. _________________ "Albatross"! |

Same theory as "snatch straps" except that the straps aren't as likely to do major damage if something fails, like a tire. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

In essence you made a variation of a snatch strap. While innovative and it worked OK in this instance, it's highly discouraged to shock load chains as they can easily turn into deadly missiles should they break under load. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

He had a guy with those straps last night, broke two of them, hard to pull a tire in half. _________________ "Albatross"! |

It's not the tire you have to worry about. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

wow....
that was probably the most aggressive use of a chain I have seen. guess these mudders aren't very bright. you never shock load a chain like that.
there is a part 2 to that vid, the drivers jaw got ripped off. some say he died, but I haven confirmed that.
guess they ran out of money for a winch, which is really what they needed. _________________

Hmm. I didn't think it was that bad, but not a good example of proper driving technique.

Wow. I always figured a stretchy strap was more dangerous, since it would load up more energy to be released when it snapped, where a chain would just break. I've seen water ski ropes snap dramatically, but the handle stays with the skier, so there is no mass to fly and hurt anyone. I guess the lesson is to stay out of the line of fire, no matter what is being used. _________________ The consequences of your decisions should not be confused with fate. |

I had a Dodge tail gate that you could count the number of chain links on. Each one made it's own distinct impression! |

Always helps to throw an old blanket or a jacket over the tow rope/cable/chain, too. If something snaps, the blanket dampens the flinging action.
I like the tire idea. Would work great in a pinch. _________________ nothing |

An old fellow years ago showed me how to pull axles out of differential housings without a puller. He just used a heavy chain bolted to the wheel studs, back up until the chain is tight. Now give it a foot or so of slack and whip a hump into it. The trick is to take up the slack at the same time as the hump hits the far end. Just like cracking a whip and the axle just pops out! |
