Both, neither, either.
By now many decades later after that transaxle was built and shipped out in a VW, it probably has been rebuilt several times. So there is no easy way to just look and tell.
Only way is to turn the input shaft and see which way the differential turns. Then you will need to sort out the gearing, via how many turns of the input shaft comes out to how many turns in each gear at the differential. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Find out if that is a bug or bus nosecone, the shift lever will be in a slightly different location. _________________ 1965 Velvet Green DC |

And the number on the nose cone will tell you the application. Starts with 211, it’s set up for a bus. Starts with 113, for a Bug. However, as stated, you still need to figure out which way it spins the axles so you know if it’s set up for straight axles or reduction boxes. _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |
