Stock shift lever ball is spinning out of it's cup when in 2nd and 4th. I checked the square head set screw back by the coupler and it's fine. There seems to be about an inch of travel in the shift rod which is causing the ball's pin to no longer be engaged in the cup while moving through the gears. Super sketchy to put back while rolling down the road. Is something up with the hockey stick? This newly purchased '68 square came with an Empi shifter which worked (poorly) so I'm trying to go back to stock. Then I found this.

What's the condition of the shift rod bushing? If the PO replaced it, it might have already worn out. I only mention that, as the reproduction ones are made using a softer material. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I just put in a new bushing so it's good. I'm thinking the PO had this problem which is maybe why the Empi shifter was put in with it's limited shift range. Once again, undoing PO's mods exposes problems. |

Have you got the matching ball housing for that stick? Maybe you have an early stick in a later housing which makes the stick ride higher in the shift rod. |

I thought about that and the reverse stop plate as well. Bentley shows two different styles. Maybe things got mis-matched at some point. If this amount of shift rod play is acceptable, I'll start looking for correct parts. Thanks for your input on this not so exciting topic.
Looks like 23mm from plate to ball bottom.

Not sure if this helps but I was a while trying to figure out why the ball on my shifter was spinning in the cup. After trying a bunch of different things, including checking the coupler, the new bushing, installing new shifter and shift plate, this is what I finally determined was the problem.
Good luck! _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.

Good tip. I'll check it out. I also went through everything else and just tried shifter number three with no improvement. I hope this is the answer. Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm battling another war on this car so it can't be driven anyway. |

To the gentleman in Newfoundland: Thank you.
Bent shift rod seems to be the culprit.

Glad I could be of assistance. I Had a really hard time figuring out what was going on with mine and couldn’t find any information here to help, so I’m glad it was useful.
By the way here is how I initially dealt with it.

It did bend slightly again after, so I ended up cutting it, inserting a piece of pipe and welding it back together. That did the trick. _________________ Air does not freeze. Air does not boil.
