First time doing this. Looks like we are filling in the low spots and evening everything out with the higher points. Does this look right?
My wife (see pictures below) really wants to know whether we are doing this the most efficient way…
Marriage could depend on this..
Thanks.

Blocking should be in a criss cross pattern with a longest block possible (like she is using).
The only section of that panel that looks a little funky (obviously pictures limit a real good look) would be that middle edge section on the hinge side. The filler does not look that tapered.
To check you can use some rattle can primer, then some guidecoat, and start sanding again with the block. Get rid of all the guidecoat with that long block and your panel is flat |

To me, block sanding is the process after high build primer afer the filler is already shaped. This picture still looks like the filler shaping process, in which case i use 36grit. If this is after high build, then you either sanded too much, or u need to go back to the filler shaping. I recommend u concentrate on getting your process down on this door, before moving ahead with any other portion. You’ll get it with enough youtubing and practice. _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia |

Also, the sanding block should be maintained parellel with the top of the door and then crosshatch sanding _________________ 1972 Karmann Ghia |

Thanks for the replies and advice.
Onceler - yes I guess I should have called that the shaping phase. We started at 40 grit and finished with 80 then 120. I primed the doors to protect against moisture while work on other areas. That and we only get to work on the car about one weekend per month. My next step will be a high-build primer and more sanding with progressively higher grits. Maybe to 400? More research to be done.
I will try to diplomatically coach my wife on her technique. I'm just grateful for her help! |

I use 80 or 150 for filler, high build 220, high build 600 or 800 depending on paint. Block criss cross and straight, X and +. Always alternate. |
