Hey quick questions sambinians. I picked my 66 single up in pieces and ..well missing most. I'm ready to put the clutch/pressure plate on and move forward, but I'm missing the pressure plate bolts. Can anybody tell me what size they are, and torque? Thanks! _________________ BarryL wrote:

They're hardened Grade 10.8 so do NOT get soft bolts. _________________ Glenn

Unless Glenn is spoofin' on the guy, I think he really meant to say "don"t" get soft bolts. Those should be special "hardened" bolts (with cut lock washers), don't just buy the normal stuff at the hardware store...

Sorry.. .brain fart.
soft bolts will snap. You want hardened bolts.
Thanks Bill. _________________ Glenn

interesting. i've only seen grade 8.8 on any original engine i've ever pulled apart, never once had a problem with "snapped" 8.8 bolts (new or used), the factory parts book does not specify higher grade bolts, and all the "without guesswork" books i looked at specify an 8G (8.8 ) bolt for this particular application. they also specify spring washers, not split lock washers. |

Anybody know the thread pitch off hand? I do know it's not m8x1.0. I picked some up and well those didn't fit. I couldn't find hardened 1.5 or 1.25 in the immediate area. Thanks! _________________ BarryL wrote:

Funny you say Kennedy. I'm putting a 2.2 Subie engine in with a Kennedy adapter. Here's a link if you want to take a look

The bolts are M8 x 25mm x 1.25 pitch, grade 8.8.
I have seen other cars use 10.9 spec bolts on the pressure plate (Volvo for one), but those cars also make more HP and have more spring pressure than a stock VW does. Of course it wouldn't hurt to upgrade to harder bolts on any application.
All the torque specs you need are here in the Technical Archives...

I'll probably go with the harder bolts, couldn`t hurt. Thanks for the info! _________________ BarryL wrote:

No such thing as grade 10.8, you mean 10.9
The current replacement part shows an 8.8 bolt N 10 2210 4 _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Helical spring washers are an ineffective way from keeping nuts and bolts from loosening and can actually accelerate their loosening. |

10.9 german is grade 8 american. grade 12 german is 10 grade american. those goofy bolts on a vw with 8 are grade 6 american. this why hardware stores carry bolts with 8 on them instead of 10 which would be stronger. don't confuse grade 10 metric with grade 10 sae (american) |

Where's that from j. ? The parts list at OACDP doesn't say the grade. Just curious. _________________ Please buy my Treasure |
