These plates came on the Thing i just got. Do you think they are original to the car or is there a way to find that out?

Very likely original to the car.
my 73 Thing came from Wisconsin in 1974 and the plate that was issued the letter were LMO. your letters would definitely fit the 73 issue year

Thanks! I bought it from a person who skipped title but the title i did get showed the owner was from Lakeside CA. And i think these were their plates.

Thought I saw it here once but IIRC someone somewhere has a list that can tell you which DMV those plates were originally issued from.

Don't remember the three numbers but do recall the last three letters on my wife's 73 with blue plates were *** JPB sold new at Century Motors Alhambra, Ca so that puts your letter sequence in the correct era to be original.
