so my question is in the 2nd photo above there is the control which sends the heat to the floor or to the windshield. in my photo below, I have a glove box which is half solid and half radio cutout(no radio yet and maybe never). There is a slot in the glovebox left of the radio cutout. How can i gain access to that heat control switch if i put a radio in? Is there an extender that is supposed to stick out or do i rig something? TY for the comparison photo Captain Spaulding.
p.s. how hard is it to replace the brake light and heat control light and also rig up a 12volt socket where that weird socket used to be? Also was that a CB radio mount below my dash?

Open the glove box? If you extended the knob through the door, you wouldn't be able to open the door anymore. It's easy to replace the lights, there is just a single small bulb inside.
You should be able to drop a 12v socket in that hole with no issue. The hole should already be about the right size. |

Ditch the glove box door and mount your radio under the dash. Heat control problem solved and your Thing is returned to a more "original" look.
I personally have a high-powered Bluetooth speaker in my door-less glove box that connected to my iPhone or iPod serves as my stereo for my Thing. No modifications necessary and I can easily remove it if I'm concerned about theft or if I want to use it away from my Thing at my destination.
As for the bracket under the dash, who knows what the previous owner had mounted there but it looks like some sort or radio or CB radio bracket.

Yes my Thing is much louder than my Vanagon Westy but that's because I have a louder exhaust (EMPI's Tri-mill Knockoff) and I typically only drive my Thing in nice weather with the top down so there's plenty of wind noise to contest with too. What you do have going for you though over the bus is a much smaller vehicle.
There are plenty of battery-powered, high-output BT speakers out there to choose from. I have a Klipsch BT speaker in the Westy for when we are stationary and don't want to run the van's Blaupunkt system and drain the battery. I also like some of the Bose models but I don't think that one of their smaller units are going to have the output you need to compete with the engine and wind noise.
In my Thing a just have a larger Polaroid branded BT speaker that I bought at Big Lots years ago for $30. At its highest volume you can hear it while you're driving down the road but you're not going to rattle any windows or do much head banging. It was cheap so if it ever gets lifted I'm not out much and since it's solid black it goes well with my white exterior/black interior motif.

There is a different lever that should have come with your glove box door. YOu remove the old lever and replace with the new one.
Instead of being at a right and, the lever is mostly straight with an offset "jog" in it for where it comes through the dash. It then sticks out straight through the slot in the glove box door. If I get a chance I will take a picture of mine although because of the radio being in the way all you will really see is the lever sticking through the slot.
Perhaps TTS has one of those levers around somewhere? |

update, no lever kit, just the reinforcement
get ahold of the thing shop and see if theyll sell you just the lever kit
