Sweet baby Jesus! I managed to put in two springs by using the brake pads as levers but the third one is being one hell of a #$^&! Is there a trick for this or is it just a matter of clamp it with vice grips and muscled it in place? |

Goes much easier and safer with a tool called brake spring pliers.
For example https://www.mamotorworks.com/VW/product/air-cooled-vw-brake-spring-pliers_382629

Is it like this?
I usually assemble the shoes with the spring on there, then hook one side into the cylinders and stretch the other side into place by pushing on the opposite shoe.
Maybe this is what you already did?
Otherwise Yes, thin nosed vice grips and stretch. _________________ How to Post Photos

Yeah, currently working on the front.
I did the two springs hooking to the brake pads and using the pads as levers, and that by itself took effort. I was having a bear of a time trying to hook the last crossing spring.
I'll give it another try tonight :-\ |

Hook the springs on the pads and use the pads to pull apart and seat the ends in the slots is much easier than trying to stretch the springs to hook into the pads. |
