Hi I just bought a 1973 Westfalia and new to thesamba. First time working on a VW. Previous owner had pulled out the firewall to replace the fuel sending unit. Just wondering if it is possible to install the firewall without lowering engine, transmission or folding the firewall up? |

Having replaced a fuel sending unit by the firewall removal method, I actually recommend you cut a hole in the top to replace it.
I removed my firewall while my engine was out, so it was a bit easier, but it isn't easy to remove and replace the sender with the gas tank in.
I also at one time removed my firewall without removing or lowering my Type 4 engine. Again, not recommended but possible. I can't speak for a Type 1 engine.
Next time I have to replace the sender, I will be cutting the hole. |

On later buses with the lock ring style sender you can cut the hole about an inch forward of where the VW service bulletin says to do so which will get the hole away from the forward edge of the deck making it easier to seal off. A squarish hole will give a better surface to pries against when removing the sender and an inch or so larger hole than VW recommends will make the job of removing the sender easier as well. |

To the OP yes you can re-install the firewall without lowering the engine. It's a pain to do. you need to remove alot of stuff to make it low enough to get it in there. _________________ 1972 Bus 1700 cc Single Carb. But not a progressive.

Wish I still had the ones I got rid of.
