I have a 1990 Vanagon Carat that runs terrible, hesitates, loses power. I disconnected the O2 sensor and it runs like a top. Got a new sensor, and same problem. Runs fine disconnected. Suggestions?

On another topic, anyone have a right side rear body trim panel? Between the rear wheel and sliding door.

Thanks,
Rick

CIP1 carries the panel. Look on Bens place website for a great pictorial on replacing it.

This manual in particular should prove useful...

Digifant ProTraining Manual

With little more than a simple multimeter most such issues can be resolved.

Much better (quicker, cheaper) to perform a methodical systems check than throw new parts at the problem.

1. Show us pics of the O2 sensor connection, please. That will clarify a lot.

2. Does your exhaust system have any leaks in it at all? Note that the O2 sensor senses the presence/absence of oxygen relative to the ambient level of oxygen. Any leak in the exhaust system, especially a large one or one located near the O2 sensor, allows ambient oxygen into the exhaust system which then produces incorrect oxygen readings, which then causes the lambda system to add fuel to burn the "excess" oxygen. The exhaust system pulses produce wave action that literally sucks air in through any exhaust system leaks.

When you unplug the O2 sensor, the ecu runs in open loop mode and ignores the input from the other sensors. Look into the protraining manual as mentioned above for the complete diagnostic procedure.

Did you ever figure out the issue?

I'm having the same symptoms after wiring my O2 sensor back in and driving it for the first time with an O2 sensor.

Still driving without the O2 sensor. Need to check on it again. Might have an exhaust leak. Let me know what you find.
