Greetings all

Does anybody have any info on the effectiveness of using cool tins v.s the stock bottom air deflectors on a type 3 engine? I was thinking along the lines of CHT's before and after installation etc. I have two sets of these tins and need to decide whether or not to install them on my Notch's engine which is being rebuilt at the moment.

Thanks,

"Cool Tins" ARE Type 3 tins.

Not quite... From the Type 3 Parts list:

113 119 451 Deflector plate from Eng. No. K 0 173 003/T 0 805 014

The part number confirms that they were first used on type 1 engines & were only installed on type 3 carburetor (K or T series) engines from August 1970. (The last bit from the type 3 production survey.)

Hence my question - How much difference do they make to a stock engine?

Number 27 was never used on Type 1 engines.

That program is callet Etka - VW dealers use it as an electronic parts catalog. Only problem is most of the old numbers aren't listed anymore.

Just keep in mind that IF you use the #27's, that you should also use the later upper tin that was designed for them. Part numbers 315 119 299 B (left), and 311 119 300 F (right). The USA only got them in very late 72, and 73 models. However, since you're in a warm climate, you might have gotten them earlier than the USA, as that's what they were designed for (warm climates). I think the lower deflectors ("sled tins") were designed for the upper tin use as well, as it all fits together a certain way, and can be a bitch to get to fit, if you don't have the right bits and pieces. Most here in the USA also safety wire them in place, as they fit rather poorly, but work well. Rolling Eyes

A year is coming up for ownership of a type 3 and honestly my opinion is on the sheet metal a type 3 is easier then a type one. Just my observation.
I did try number 27 on a type one engine...for get about it!
