Good to see progress on the inner structure of the nose - lots of critical alignment and repair - well done! _________________ 1963 Karmann Ghia |

Feels so good having again something to report here!!
I had a lot of issues with my beetle, that led to no time for the ghia for several months. But it looks like that it's now over and I plan to work on the ghia every week like before I started in January back on this project
so, what happened the last couple weeks?
I first finished my second door strut, so that I will be able to start the heater channel when time comes.. Of course, everybody loves pictures so:
Then I made a bit on the front-left bottom..here is also some work needed:
same behind the front metal:
so let's measure the fresh metal needed:
and make some place:
the part of the heater channel behind was quite rusted..
then adjusting:
and point welding in place with the tig:
and continuously welding, mostly without extra material, as adjustment was great:
Almost fully welded, next time I will finish the welding, planishing it and then put in primer:
stay tuned, a lot more coming

I would be at a loss to figure out how to get all the parts lined up properly again!! I find every step of your restoration to be very educational and it is so interesting to see the construction details of how these cars are designed and built. Keep up the fine work. I can't wait to see the car all back together again. _________________ Marc

No problem at all
So, after its arrival, I did a bit of disassembly and created some reinforcement to "replace" the doors:
And then it was time to build a dolly and take off the body:
Now you can enjoy the view on the terrible fiberglass pan riveted by the previous owner
Stay tuned!

Antoine your work is amazing and inspiring. I am in the midst of stripping down a 67 to send to the media blasting shop, where the body will be separated from the frame/pan and both will be blasted. Your support in place of the doors is very tidy indeed. I would not have thought this prudent unless the car happened to be a convertible. Would I be making a mistake in continuing my process without these supports?
Thanks! |

Thanks a lot guys, really appreciated
@will t: it depends on your car, normally if your heater channels aren't that bad, you don't need them on a coupé. In m'y case, I knew they were crusty so I preferred being safe it is also quite easy if you do a simple fixture like mine

Makes sense, thanks. And by the way you are inspiring me to learn how to do metalwork! |

Thanks, happy if this thread motivates you to start in the amazing world of metalshaping
the latest update:
After the welding primer dryed out, it was time to tack weld the airbox, only a couple tacks at the beginning to check it assembled:
Seems to fit good:
Then I put the repro "tunnel" for the back part..and it was totally wrong. I compared it with my original..and for sure it was way off...
I then made some cut to "adapt" it:
and welded some tab to keep the position:
Then it was a matter of filling the space by creating the missing part and tig welding it:
now it fits:
and then I removed the old storage primer, put some primer on it and then some paint in the OG color except where welding comes (I put there some welding primer!):
and the some on the body counterpart:
Cheers

Awesome as always Antoine! I am really so envious of guys like you who can just fabricate pieces so well and with such precision. Great to see all the hard work you have taken on to preserve this Ghia instead of letting it die in a rust pile!

Hello Antoine,
Your work is amazing and I love your commitment and determination to bring this Karmann Ghia back to life.
I came across this picture yesterday in one of my photo folders and remembered seeing your 1960 Strato Blue build thread. This is a picture when it was for sale in Portland, Oregon on Craigslist. Maybe someone here knows who owns the Oval window?
