So, finally some metal shaping to show
My rear apron was heavily bent so I first moved it a bit back in shape by hand :
Here some better view (and on the part to replace due to rust too !):
And after some massaging and hammering, still some finishing to do but the shape is back and we are almost dent-free:
Then I took care of the surrounding of the engine, where normally the fixation for the sealing should be..old metal left, lots of bends,..
And after some grinding of the unwanted metal pieces and a lot of small hammering:
We are now good to go!
I also started on the battery tray/engine surrounding, here the preparation of the patches:
So after some more adjustments/checkings, I started to make some space:
Adjusting the first piece:
And TIG -welded :
And adjusting the next one:
Welding next time, was already late in the night..
Thanks for following, good to be back at it!

It's an incredible amount of work, and I hope the OP used it as a learning tool.
We all love our Ghias, but life is short, and restorations like this should be spent wisely on something a little more valuable. I come from the vintage Mustang world, and it takes the same effort to build a fastback or convertible as it does a coupe. I'll never build a coupe again. Make sure your time is well-spent. |

I think there's no limit to your skills. It's apparent that you enjoy a challenge as well as your metal working skills. The fresh air levers came out great. Thanks for sharing. _________________ Marc

I think we don't all have the same priorities or the same taste. Not everyone looks at a project and sees $$$$$. For some of us, it's just for self satisfaction and the challenge. Fun and enjoyment. _________________ Marc

I agree with you. The people who told Van Gogh and Rodin they were wasting their time have long since been forgotten because they left us nothing by which we may remember them. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Please keep quotable comments to one per month
I think this comment perfectly sums up the Ghia restoration hobby, especially for those of us who enjoy the build process.

Small repairs count for significant boosts in accomplishment, Antoine.
At first I thought you should've made your battery patch panel slightly longer to the rear so that it touches the rear vertical part of the fender, but then I remembered you need space to fit the rubber weatherstrip between them. Here's a shot of the left side of my '64's all-original metal engine compartment, where you can see the rubber strip at the bottom of the photo. You can also see the relative spacing of the 3 metal tabs which hold the sound insulation panels in place against the lip of your patch panel. But maybe you still have those tabs on the left side of your engine bay for positioning reference.
Note that my rectangular "depression"- the mirror image of the battery area depression- is smaller than on yours and has a more simple shape. The changeover took place midway through the '64 model year. |

So, then it was time to work my way to the heater channel replacement!
First, some wood working:
And the body is up in the air:
Then getting close to the pan for checking of the heater channel adjustment:
Pan getting high:
And all fits really well as it should:
So I screwed the pan in position:
And welded the heater channel to the Body:
Starting first with couple of weld and then re checking everything, including also with the outside rocker, the door, the front wing,..couple pictures on the way:
Then I made enough welds in order for the heater to now really be connected to the body. Then I will remove the pan and finish all welding (like to the heater tube of the body) with a better access 😉
But before that, I worked my way on the A-pillar:
Ready for it:
Adjusting:
Welding:
Grinding:
Done:
Only thing left is this connection to the front wing, it is adjusted:
But will be finally welded when 100% adjusted with the front wing in place.
Stay tuned

One of the great pleasures in life is watching a master craftsman (or woman) at work.
Thank you Antoine, for giving me that enjoyment. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Antoine, great progress!
Its getting more and more a car and I have no doubt that this is going to be a nice one. Keep going even if its maybe hard sometimes to stay motivated if you cannot see big results even after spending days of work.
I am always excited in following your journey. |
