This is my new project. I have owned/ restored 18 air cooled VW's over the years but I have never owned a VW Type III (Squareback). The previous owner took great care of this car but she still needs quite a bit of work. I will document the work along the way. For now I just want to get it cleaned up, see if I can get the paint to shine again and get it running. First order of business though will be to get the drivers seat rail repaired. For those of you in the Pacific Northwest you may recognize this car from a fellow Samba member. My plan is to bring it back as a well-preserved stock car and replace as little of the original metal as possible. These pictures are as she sits right now, fresh out of a long hibernation. It is currently not running because of old gas and possibly a bad or stuck fuel pump. It is still fuel injected and I plan to keep it that way. Stay tuned...

Better shape then mine that sat under pine trees for ten years. Nice that you have sun roof, roof rack, vent shades, bamboo parcel tray, pop out windows. Great grocery getter. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

I loved driving my old square, this one looks to be in great shape all things considered. Especially for Washington areas if you're close to the West coast. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

That's what I was thinking. She must have gotten something to replace it, since she was active with "snow sports". _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Tram, Bob, you are both correct. It is Annie's old car. She just didn't have the time to put into Savanna that it needs. I promised her I would take good care of it. We don't live far from each other so I'm sure she will hold me to my word!As you both probably already know, it's in pretty good shape. I will post some pictures soon of the areas that need some attention. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia

Shocked she'd ever let it go, but these things happen, I suppose. Last time I saw Savanna was just after Cruise for the Cure '09, when my wife and pup and I stopped by for by couple days to help Annie stuff the engine back in (it was her first overhaul if I recall, and she did a nice job!)
I forget the name of the fellow who painted it up there but he did not skimp on paint so what's there should buff out nicely.
I recognize a lot of stuff on that car.
Have fun with it- it's a good one! What all does she need? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I agree Tram, in that I'd never thought she'd sell it. She used to drive that car everywhere. But then she was always going places a lot, which might have caused Savannah to get laid up, and parked. Annie did go to Hawaii after all. I agree with Tram, have fun with it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

She needs plenty. See the pictures below. Annie told me a local guy named Damon painted it. It has survived pretty well but I will be doing some painting to repair the rusted areas.
Annie still has her bus but once the seat track broke on this car she parked it for safety reasons and never got back to it. I was as shocked as you guys when I saw it up for sale. I didn't waste any time going to get it! _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia

Here are the areas that need the most work. The heater channels (plus the exterior rockers) and the trunk area are the worst. I think I can save the drivers side pan since it is mostly surface rust.
The sunroof needs some adjustment and a new seal.
The trunk is pretty bad. Never, ever let your brake fluid leak and stay on the paint. This is what will happen. Do they make a repair panel for this or do I need to find a donor car?
Spare tire area isn't too bad but the bumper mounts are both rusted out.
Luckily Annie supplied me with both heater channels complete with good rockers. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia

Ouch. Sad to see Savanna like that, but you'll put her right. Yes, Damon was the painter/ body guy. Just couldn't come up with the name. He had a Beetle Limo he built that was off the hook!
Mike Fisher down here in Oregon can likely cut you the other panels you need. PM him. If you need any help, yell. This car NEEDS to get healed! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

I was going to say contact Mike Fisher or Joel (Boo-Koo-Z) in Washington for rust repair metal, as no one is making reproduction parts (except floors) for these cars. Good luck with the repairs, as that car really deserves to be fixed. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks for the tips Bob (and Tram). I emailed Joel and attached a picture of the rotted area in the trunk. I certainly believe this car needs and will be saved. I'm no stranger to fixing rusty VW's, just look how bad my former '71 convertible was.
On the plus side, my son and I think we almost have the car ready to run. It was a running, driving car before the seat track broke so hopefully it won't take much to see her purr again. We started with the sniff check of the gas tank and quickly surmised that the old fuel in there had to go. We took the tank out and dumped the old gas into a gas can. Then began seeing what worked and what didn't as far as fuel delivery goes. I could hear the fuel pump relay working but the fuel pump wasn't. I pulled the pump out of the car and my son bench tested it and it wouldn't spin at all. He is a wizz at electric motors so he took it apart and figured out that the brushes were stuck and not contacting the stator. He fixed that and the pump started working! While he was working on the pump I messed with the engine and checked the oil (good), cleaned the points and pulled the air cleaner and intake boot to make sure there were no unwanted guests in there since there was evidence of mice on the engine. Today I came home to find him in the trunk replacing all of the crusty old fuel lines and he also put in a new fuel filter. The battery is on a trickle charger so we may give it a go tomorrow. Why bother to see if it will run at this point you may ask? I want to hear it run, and lets face it, we need some good news from this car at this point in the game.
Here is some more rust to show the extent of how bad the heater channels are. Drivers side. Luckily the passenger side isn't nearly as bad.
The good news is that Annie provided me with two complete heater channel sections to repair all the rusty areas.

Bob, yes. At least I have those parts to fix the complicated heater channels. I have heard back from both Mike Fisher and Joel and neither of them have the parts to fix the rust in the trunk. I guess I will be fabricating those parts.
We haven't gotten it to run yet. The fuel pump is acting up and we got it running but it isn't pumping. We will continue to mess with that when time allows. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia

I told you I thought I had early model metal that looks just like late model metal minus the safety crush box on the outside of the inner fender.
Early metal would look better than anything you're likely to fab from scratch.
If you are that worried about having the goofy crush box you could fab it onto early metal. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

For a pump, you can use the Airtex E2000, or the precision brand E16020 from O'Reilly's. These pumps are replacements for an 86-89 Ford ranger frame mounted pump. There are quite a few of us running this pump without issues. My wife's 70 Fastback has been running 1 since 2008. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Mike, guess I misunderstood. I'm new to these type III's. So the early metal will work and look like the passenger side? I'm likely to just fab up some repair panels anyway because, 1) I'm cheap and 2) the repaired area will be covered by a trunk liner. _________________ 1970 Pastel White Westfalia
