Is there a late 4 lug drum that will fit an early 5 lug rear axle ?

The Beetle 4 lug drum fits if you cut 5/8" off the nose. Use the late backing plate and brakes. I'm not sure if you keep the original bearing cap.

Hope this helps. Al

PS- I forgot to mention the added benefit of the swap is the brake shoes are 10 mm wider...

Bearing cap stays with the axle tube. You don't have to swap to later brakes, but since you can with the wider 4 lug drum, it's a good idea. It will increase the rear track width by 7.5mm (0.3 inch) per side.
