I'd much rather have the diesel although I would also much prefer a 2WD over a syncro if given the option, assuming similar purchasing price. |

I understand maintenance and parts costs but 2 vs 4 depends a lot on where you live and what you want to do with it.

You mean not everyone has the same priorities and desires? Doesn't that go without saying?
I see several feet of snow every year. This was only halfway through the dump:

EJ 2.2 pre 1994 non interference. Timing belt easy to change in an afternoon. All in less than $400 using quality parts. Do compression check. You can get guage on ebay for $25. If real fancy get the die that changes color to see if you have combustion gasses in the antifreeze. |
You can rent the guage for compression along with exhaust gas check from autozones under their free rental tool kit program! |

One problem I'd have with a pristine van is I would feel guilty molesting it, which I love doing. You can bet I'd change the tranny oil though. |
I can understand your guilt about this. I would feel bad also, yet I found a work around that’s guilt free. Shop for your Vanagons in junk yards. As you build it your way, that OEM felling goes away. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet
