I'd much rather have the diesel although I would also much prefer a 2WD over a syncro if given the option, assuming similar purchasing price.

I understand maintenance and parts costs but 2 vs 4 depends a lot on where you live and what you want to do with it.

You mean not everyone has the same priorities and desires? Doesn't that go without saying?

I see several feet of snow every year. This was only halfway through the dump:

EJ 2.2 pre 1994 non interference. Timing belt easy to change in an afternoon. All in less than $400 using quality parts. Do compression check. You can get guage on ebay for $25. If real fancy get the die that changes color to see if you have combustion gasses in the antifreeze.

You can rent the guage for compression along with exhaust gas check from autozones under their free rental tool kit program!

One problem I'd have with a pristine van is I would feel guilty molesting it, which I love doing. You can bet I'd change the tranny oil though. Rolling Eyes

I can understand your guilt about this. I would feel bad also, yet I found a work around that’s guilt free. Shop for your Vanagons in junk yards. As you build it your way, that OEM felling goes away. Laughing
