I noticed the body number stamp under the front nameplate is 11995. I have had two 1946 beetles built end of Sept 1946, with body numbers 10086 and 10089. |

No picture of tunnel serial number and ID plate looks home made, heater boxes are newer, dash VW plate should be a separate plate with a VW not KdF logo which supports the assumption that a 1946 body was utilized and logo swapped? Front axles has parts from 1943; 1945 king pins are much sturdier. Black vs British Military Green? KdF hubcaps vs no hubcaps/clips which was the setup from 1943 to 1946? Oval Beetle seats? Hardly worth the money even if the frame tunnel would be from 1945 (and nothing else?). |

I wonder if any of the antipodean members can provide any back story for this car? _________________ "we're here on Earth to fart around" kurt vonnegut

A knowledgeable friend pointed out that the serial number plate might be original but the year of production is clearly stamped "6" which would coincide with the body number (see under serial number). That would mean that the serial number cannot be 53238 but something else with the last digits "238". Also, the type 51 serial numbers in 1945 started with "5" not "1", as did the previously built 82e. |

In 1945 the material supply and production means were extremely short and narrow. 1945 post war built bugs, of which survived only a very limited number into our days have a roof that is welded together from three pieces. The transversal edges in the roof on real 45 bodies are well noticeable.
Another 1945 only interesting detail is the shortnecked tank.

IN2VWS: Are the pictures from the unrestored car?
What do you know about that car
The number 1-053238 is mentioned in the registry here on the samba.
The seller confirmed me that the roof was made out of three pieces, but I have not seen pictures and I doubt if he really understand What I was asking. _________________ Dutch Karmann-Ghia and coachbuild lover.

Not sure, but I suspect the pan on the right might be the original pan found with the car.

1-053238 is not in the registry, it is 5-053238, 51 - British Military Beetle which would be correct for a Type 51. 1-053238 does not make sense.
5-053422 Type 51 is in Germany (maybe Grundmann?), it would be interresting to compare details. |

I see several 1-053xxx cars build in 1945 in the registry. Probably type 11 and type 51 were build next to eachother in 1945
Also 1-053814 and 5-053814. Is this a mistake? _________________ Dutch Karmann-Ghia and coachbuild lover.

Here is a ”real” 1945 Type 51
The first Type 11 was built on 22 November 1945 and had a 5-prefix serial number 5-052847 (although it was a normal Sedan) and a Kübelwagen engine 2-078290. Only 57 Type 11 Sedans were built in 1945 and a total of 699 Type 51 Beetles and 522 Kübelwagens.
Obviously existing chassis (and engines) were utilized so the serial number designation was not uniform.
The chassis 5-053238 was built 16 November so it was definitely a Type 51.
The engine number is 578572. That would place it to May 1953. |
