I have a neighbor who has a 1961 vert, and she has no key for her ignition (not that she’s going to be starting the engine anytime soon, due to a lot of restoration needed).
Question: how can she have a key made? Can she send the ignition to a locksmith and have them make up a couple keys?
I’ve never lost my keys, so the issue is a mystery to me.

There are folks with key blanks and who can cut them. Search the forums and classifieds. If the switch is original, they will know which blank it needs.
I think VW didn't harmonize the door and ignition keys until the late '60s or later, so you can't go by the door key blank and code to guide you, so this might be tough.
On the other hand, that ignition switch isn't hard to find and that will come with a new key. This may be the easiest and cheapest way forward. |

Justin at baughmanlock is another,
get the key code off the lock or send the lock to him.
Highly recommended, reasonable cost and turn around.

You can use this key code to contact Gabe the key guy or another VW key person and he can cut a new key blank by that code. |
Another shout out for Gabe. If you send him a VW lock, he can make you a key. Check him out here -- https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1428884 _________________ Kafer_Mike

Door handle locks matched ignition locks from Jan 1, 1954 onwards. The exception is steering column and shifter locks.
The only reason they didn't match prior to that was because they used different blanks, so they couldn't be matched. _________________
