Is this a VW Bug luggage rack? Someone wrote on a piece of duct tape that it was a roof rack for a 1960's VW Bug but I've searched the internet, and can't find anything like it. The racks I'm finding all have feet on the corners which fit into the rain gutters. This one has/had rubber feet which sat on the roof, and clips attached to straps that secured it to the gutters I assume.
Thanks,
Jay

Appears to be an Allstate Luggage Rack sold at SEAR'S... like the one in top left corner.

I don't think those are Allstates- but they are American made and were sold through Western Auto according to the previous owner of mine. I'm hunching somebody here with an old JC Whitney catalog might see these too. I have owned one since 1986. It's just garage art now. I'll find an old picture and post it here later this evening.
This rack has terminated rails- not boxed like the Allstate. Similar though in that they both are nut and bolted together- probably came in a box the size of a folded camp chair. _________________

Of course, these are photos of old photos- but this is what the rack looks like installed on a bug. I remembered a little extra history too. In about 1990 I visited the world famous Wolfsburg Warehouse in Seattle. Bill Deryckz(sp) had one of these exact racks on his wall- and thought it was for a Karmann Ghia. I talked with him about it being a little big for one. That was the only time I feel I knew more than Bill an anything VW.
The clips do not exactly match the profile of a bug- but it never came loose on mine. I resurrected the wood and replaced the cups from the hardware store (common item).

Thought I would post a few more photos from different angles. I'm not sure if this is exactly like the one in the ad, but it is very close. I take it that it would date from the 60's and with the exception of missing rubber cups, and a missing bolt from the roof end of the tube it basically in Very Good condition. Gawd I hope this all makes sense.
I'm planning on selling it locally as it would be hard to ship. I suppose I could disassemble it, but that's harder than it sounds due to arthritis in my hands.
I appreciate you guys looking at it and providing information.
Have a good one.

Don't mean to hijack the thread but it seemed relevant enough for me to ask this question-- I thought Lietz only made roof racks for Porsche (that's all I had ever seen..) but there's one for sale here that obviously fits a bug, wondering if it's worth the $250 asking price:

It isn't the one in the ad- we covered that earlier. Your upper rail end caps have been replaced with black furniture leg caps (I think it's okay)- the originals were more like ten speed bicycle handlebar end caps- gripped internally if that makes sense- and are a semi-translucent plastic.
The suction cups should be easy to replace and might be required if anyone wants the rack. _________________

SB001- I see those racks often for around $100- they're SOOO universal it should be considered a crime for someone to claim they were made just for a beetle. It will fit almost anything- the rails adjust for the width of large wagons, suburbans, cargo ships... _________________

Yes, I was going to say the last one I saw, which was a few years ago, was $90 and I don't think it sold at the VW swap meet I saw it at.
That one on Facebook is pretty nice condition though, nicer than most I have seen _________________ How to Post Photos
