I read the new race was falling in. Again you could dimple the disc surface and some bearing lock, but why screw around? The race must remain secure.

The inner race needs to sit square with no wobble on the spindle. It's unlikely that is the case and there was discussion a while ago that the inner race does turn some on the spindle.

Those bearings carry a lot of load and they keep the wheel on and the brakes working. If you don't care about your safety think about those around you. You already had a failure and survived. Second times a charm?

Yikes
Sodo thinks your spindle is hopeless.....
You’d have to take the van in for “re-alignment” to the new direction that your wheel is pointed.

Which could be ‘variable’.

OK yeah...never suggested I want to compromise safety to save a few $$$, not my style, I'm not that guy.
I posted because I literally have no perspective on this issue and looking for advice which I accept readily.

Already started shopping for used spindles & have a few sets of brand name rotors saved in my eBay summary. Cool

So much for my tax refund... Rolling Eyes Laughing Wink

That spindle now scares the crap out of me. I have had a stub axle break and it was not good. The hub also should not allow the outer race to fall in like that. If it was mine I’d junk it all and replace. If I was in the middle of the outback I’d try to make it work until I reached civilization. YMMV.

The MB axle nuts are awesome and will never contribute to that sort of bearing failure unless they are over tightened just like the stock peaned nut could.

Is there a torque spec for the cap bolt on the MB nuts? Haven't seen that anywhere yet...

It isn't torqued up per se - just done up enough that the washer can only just be moved around with a screwdriver - i.e. not tight but virtually no free play.

Then the bolt is done up on the MB nut - or the OEM nut is peened.

^^^ Yeah...I'm asking about torque spec for the "lock" bolt that pinches the MB nut in place once on the spindle...???

Not much torque at all for the bolt of the nut. Hand tight with a 3/8 ratchet did me for a long time. Those were used on the ‘71 bus which I had for 22 years. Not much reason for it to loosen.

mmmyeah... looks pretty FUBAR. there's way more going on than a SpeediSleeve would correct. look for a different stub. i've got one here on a donor but i need the chassis to roll around the yard so something would have to go back on. i bet you can find one already taken off and not covered in 3' of snow yet.

I thought some of the '85's also came with the later spindles.

Although getting new or good used is the way to go, here's a different take if the above was not available and you had more money to burn... Metalize the worn parts. I worked briefly for a firm in the later '80s that did this for worn metal parts that needed new metal to be sprayed onto the worn section, then machined back to the original spec.
Very cool process, just not cheap...... Embarassed

Plus, the people doing this can add alloys to the sprayed product to change the wear factor of the part if needed, like adding Case hardening in a sense or more corrosion resistance.

So, if this was a spindle from 'unavailable' brand of vehicle, it's a way to go to saving something like your spindle and hub.

As a general rule, all 8mm fasteners should be in the 16-20lbft range (except CV's). I just make them tight enough (pinch bolts on spindles that is) Wink

That general rule is good, except remember that 8mm CV bolts which get 2X the torque.

Nice...even with the exchange, that's only $380 brand new! Smile Shipping is another matter, however...

(Compared to a Chicago parts house I just talked to, wanted $495 for used...) Rolling Eyes

Thanks for the link! Cool

That's insanity.. I have a line on a used spindle for you. $60, just have to ship it from SF.
