Hey everyone -- so my 84 was parked for a few months, inside.

I started her up and the oil pressure dummy light remained on. I shut her down, looked at the oil and there was plenty and it is clean. I let her idle for a bit, then reved her up and the light remained.

I checked the wiring to the switch which is at the front of the engine. All looked good. I decided the switch was faulty, with no sounds coming from the engine. I took her out for a long highway drive and slowly the light dimmed and went out.

She is still mostly parked but this issue is intermittent. Sometimes it's on, sometimes not.

I think the switch may be gummed up or faulty.

I did install the vangaon.org dash lights kit last summer and this issue did not occur, but I wonder if maybe this is the issue.

Anyhow, I did order a new switch from Van Cafe.

Any thoughts or tips for removing and reinstalling this switch? How much to torque it? Anything??

Many thanks,

David

pretty common for these switches to clog with gunk when they sit.

if the switch you remove has a VW stamp on it and is not seeping around the plastic, you might consider cleaning it out with some carb/brake cleaner and trying to continue using it. no knock on VC, but things aren't made like they used to be. the OG switch will probably still outlast a new replacement if you can get it working.

you will need a proper (non impact) deep well socket as it's pretty sandwiched between the PR tubes. don't remember the size off hand, but it's 22 or 24mm. they are 10x1mm thread with a crush gasket, so tighten up to just snug: 10ft/lb or so. most importantly: get after those bottom exhaust bolt/nut NOW with some heat and penetrant.

think that just about covers it. good luck Smile

Thanks -- I'll try cleaning it first -- much appreciated!
