Most will start a Build thread, and post as they go. To save time and 60 pages of drama, (and steering folks the wrong way sometimes) I just finished this engine, and now posting the step by step. Dyno pull is at the end so if you don't wanna read just scroll down.

Sweep the floor...we all been there. What were once dream parts now fill a dark corner of our closet. We found parts that we like better, and built/building a bigger badder engine.

Case in point here:

AS41 case from previous build

Bunch of cheap chrome tin that I sandblasted and painted

84mm Chevy 4340 Crank, H-Beams, and some Magnum Straight cuts from Serrano 13+ years ago

Mofoco 050 Heads that never got used

CB 1.3 Rockers that I tried to save after buddies same rockers died early

Leftover 48 idf's

A bunch of AN fittings and Teflon lines

After flowing the heads, and getting decent but not race flow characteristics, I decided to build a driver instead of a racer engine, and detune it for more torque and longevity. Sold the FK45 and VW650 springs, and got ACN Beehives and used the CB 1.3 rockers and CB2292 cam. (.491 lift only now)

Imagine, Roys Mofoco 050's, with John at ACN's Beehives, and CB Performance rockers all in the same top end :2gunfire:

Everyone has seen a shortblock buildup. So I'm not focusing on that, and just showing some other stuff that might be unique.

Chevy journals with H-beams drop right in. No issues:

Almost forgot, the oil pickup used with longer button head screws:

The Mofo's

See anything weird? So I guess im gonna be using thread sealant with the cylinder tin screws? No, I just put a set screw inside.

The feeling is like when you buy a loaf of bread, and when you get home you see that someone opened up the package with a box cutter that sliced through your bread.

digging these out of my closest, I pulled the valves out again to install the beehives and polished the valves and re lapped them.

From the flow bench:

Hi-jacked my 50amp oven circuit to run the flow bench. Cooking is over rated anyhow:

The CB rockers were same model that died early in my buddies car, so as a precaution I did some home grown heat treat and polished them up before they went to sleep in my closet:

Might as well clean up the whole thing. Yes I have issues

Lets talk fittings.
Ever seen one of these? its a 37 degree fitting surfacing tool:

See anything interesting here?

Oh, your gonna need these too:

So the fitting clean up ok:

Quick Polish on the buffer:

And do these too, notice inset one is not done to show how they come:

My son proud of the engine so far:

Breather to each carb top:

Welded a fitting to breather filler, and ran hose off of it:

Full Flow hoses are too important to mess up, so I had those made:

The Empi Cast iron cover had to be tightened down till it almost cracks before the dang thing seals, so I yanked it off in favor of a billet aluminum cover. I like the full length raised area of this cover. And check out the flanged titanium nuts, they have a 17.8 diameter flange that is PERFECT as it actually centers the oil pump cover! The largest flange on any other 13mm is 17.2mm.

Check out the backside of this she-devil:

Ok, so I added some curve for better flow, matching the cast iron angle:

installed now:

Lets talk Carbs:
This looks like it can benefit from some love:

So a little effort cleans it up:

these too:

Done and not done, a lil difference might help some:

No sense on using towers to mount the linkage high, so I chopped and re-profiled:

Cleaned up the arms and carb tops too:

installed and added some stainless choke covers:

Little detail, use 2 of the brass tee's and it can all fit nicely. Oil Pressure sender, Oil temp sender, and a Mechanical Gauge:

Lets talk Exhaust:

1-5/8 header, 3 bolt 1/2 inch thick flange, and made a custom dual exhaust using single chambered stainless muffler and 90's:

Welded together with stainless fluxcore wire:

And all together:

in case u wanna see what the inside of these look like:

On the dyno ready to go:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I did a cam break in, 25 mins. Then about 5 mins of putting a braking load on the engine, then went for a few pulls.

The engine is set at .040 deck and 10.5:1, and with 30 mins of running it has 140-148psi so the rings are NOT seated yet. The only problem is, living in a residential neighborhood, I don't have many 6k rpm pulls before the neighbors/cops start showing up, so I will break it in the rest of the way in the car, and make some passes at bug-o-rama on May 26th.

Dyno pull from my garage, 165HP @5800 and 162ft-lbs TQ at 4600:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niVSq86r45E&t=44s

Not bad for only 140 PSI and .491 total lift, good for a daily. Next engine will be more aggressive. I have the case already back from Brothers for that one, and will have fun with it soon as this is dialed into my daily.

Awesome build! Love me some engine porn Wink

I have to ask, how many hours did you spend polishing all those parts?

I am jealous of all the great tools you have. How does it drive?

A few questions:
1. What length rods did you use and was that a pure drop in with the 84mm Chevy rods and crank since I do not see any clearancing on the case top or the cam for the extra throw.
2. What is that 37 degree tool? It is obvious those an fitting are not all created equal.
3. What sanding roll grit did you use to port the air cleaner base to the carb/velocity stack?
4. What grits, wheels, and compounds did you use on your polish wheels?
5. Where did you get those three bolt exhaust flanges?

just curious, and for the sake of discussion, what are your thoughts on polished versus rough surfaces for air flow and mixture quality. Its evident you prefer the polished, but why?

lots of interesting info out there about rough surfaces being better for an intake tract...

some heads and manifolds I just had hand worked have a rough burr treatment all the way through, curious to see how they tune.

Great work, Jpaull! I'm definitely digging the attention to detail you put into this build!

I agree with this!!

I like those tiny mufflers. It will be interesting to see how they sound and how loud they are. Those are much easier to tuck away.

What did your heads end up flowing, and what was the port volume?

I have some raw 050's from MoFoCo to replace my 80's vintage "performace" heads, it gives me hope for them. Just wondering if I should upgrade the valve springs to the Beehives...LOL, it is never ending.

I just searched for the 37* surfacing tool. Can't find it. Could you please tell us where you got that?

EDIT: Is this what you used?
