Recently I had the opportunity to drop my fuel tank two times - after the first time the sender wasn't sealed properly and gas started pouring out when I filled up the tank!
I didn't see any detailed posts here on this work and tank reseal, so I'll write up what I did (the second time) that seemed to work well:
1. Before lowering the tank, reach in through wheel well sides and pop up the cross over pipe and filler neck vent line from its grommets.
2. With the tank sitting on the driveway, install 4 new grommets (use a little Armor All to lub the grommets before putting in).
3. On the sender, do the usual bend tabs up on leading edge. I didn't need to shave the plastic ramps on the sender unit. Just used lithium grease to seat the o-ring and get it to stick onto the o-ring grove. It smoothly locked into place. The lithium grease lubricates and makes it easy to turn the sender.
Then with some gas still in the tank, flip the tank over and see if the sender leaks gas. The tank is not under pressure so this is a good test.
4. Loosely cover up grommets holes with tape so dirt doesn't fall in during install.
5. Take a photo of the cross over vent pipe as it lays in the car - you want to place the new one in exactly the same place, like over the emergency brake cable, ...etc.
6. Get new cross over pipe and put in place.
7. Install the tank completely seated in its final position.
8. Reach in through the opening in the wheel well and push in the vent lines into the grommets. If the tank isn't raised completely the lines may not reach the grommets. I also used Armor All to lubricate the grommets to facilitate easy push in of the vent lines.
That's it! The remaining other steps are obvious.
I also found it helpful to remove the two front wheels. |
