Johannes, sorry I haven't been following... what's the build date on your car? It must be very early because I don't see how that rear duct could have worked in a Variant with the hinged seat bottom. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

The seat frame is slightly different on an early Variant seat

Volkstown
I met an old duffer Charlie Hassel. He sold me my first side draft set up. He took it off of his 63 Notch he had switched to dual solex. This guy would import "used" T3's from Germany. Had a deal going with some VW dealer in Encinitas CA. He professed to bringing in no less than 9 T3s - Including T34's. Apparently it was lucrative back then and did come with penalties if caught from VW. His 63 had been in an accident, denting the door and was sold on to a dealer in Germany to which sold it on to him as "used" with like 5k on the odometer.
Also Dave Love has a 62 notch. One of several that was brought in by a dealer in San Diego, Mission Bay area as well. Im sure under similar circumstances or at a minimum what this Volkstown did.
Very cool documentation to see this. Puts an anchor on so many old VW dudes stories Ive heard over the years. _________________

I've heard that you actually could order Type 3s and 34s through the dealer, but it was sort of like ordering "animal style" from In N Out... and dealers were only allotted so many. I've heard this from multiple random unrelated sources through the years, including Knute Qvale, who should have known.
"Our" 1966 T34 "Cabrio" was brought in through a dealer in Salem, if memory serves. I have a bunch of paperwork in a file in one of my old filing cabinets someplace. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

There's a good Car and Driver article from 1964 on the VW 1500 gray market:
http://vwplusvw1500.blogspot.com/2009/10/car-and-driver-on-vw-1500-gray-market.html
The gist of the article is that on the record VW was against US dealers selling VW 1500s, but unofficially they tolerated and even encouraged gray market sales through dealerships. The most profitable part of the dealers' business was service and parts, and more VW sales were good for everyone. Nudge nudge, wink wink. |
That didn't "just" go on with VW, either. Mercedes was notorious for it. A good example of this was in the early to mid 80s when the USA market was stuck with the 380SL as the only SL offered in USA. It was known as the "Edsel SL". The 3,8 V-8 was prone to problems (single row L-O-N-G timing chain on a V-8, for one ) and it was an emission control choked pig that gave disappointing MPG too. In Europe you could get the 6 cyl OHC 280 (which could pass the 380 like the 380 was standing still) or the V-8 500. 500SLs are everywhere. Wonder why.
This is also why there are so many YOM issues on titles, too. We've all seen the '63s that are '64s. The dealers used to take advantage of the fact that the DMVs really didn't understand German model years and secretly declare the cars as last year's model to save trade deficit alarm bells and duty.
Back before things were computerized at the DMV, a lot of mistakes were made on titles. Some were system wide flubs.
A good customer of mine who passed away last year bought a VW Panel in 1957. supposedly it was the first one in Lane County. When the estate went to sell it, there was a huge problem... with the original 1957 title! The number didn't match... I mean, not one single digit on the title matched any digit on the Bus.
His daughter emailed me a copy of the title and I looked at the "VIN" and soon found out it was a September 1956 36 HP engine number. Yup, either the dealer or DMV goofball opened the engine lid and used the first number he saw. I had to go to the DMV with the executor and explain what likely happened, using the good ol' Samba to illustrate. I was at least able to talk them into letting the daughter keep the original title as provenance of ownership. Thankfully the DMV folks know me and sometimes call me for difficulties with these old errors.
Sixty years of registration and license plate renewals on an engine number.
The best part was I told the daughter to check through her dad's parts stash and look for a case with the number on the title because I bet he hung onto it when he replaced it even if it was worn out. Guess what? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Hi folks,
Can anyone please tell me the difference between these rear wheel cylinders.....
311-611-067B - 22.2 chassis 76 300 to 221 974
361-611-069B - 25.4 chassis numbers as above
361-611-067 - 23.8 chassis 221 975 to 483 592
Apart from the obvious bore differences is there anything else? Could any of these be used on any of the early chassis?
My car is listed as needing 361-611-067 but I'm having trouble finding a NOS pair Ate. Thanks for your input |

With out looking at my PN book - the 25.4 is for a Squareback, the other two are early, late notch and T34. This all being pre 65.
They were playing with brake shoe sizes early on with the wide five stuff. Regardless - the rear wheel slave cylinders all fit any year all the way through 73 if I recall? Correct me if wrong. So the idea being that you then just get the biggest volume ones you can - which should be easier to get. _________________

Beautiful! Now you can send it to me as everyone is focused on squarebacks and automatics.

I added the VW 1500 Notchback / Squareback / Variant article from the October, 1961 Cars magazine to the "Misc Magazines" page here:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/misc_magazines.php
I scanned it at 600 dpi so the pages are huge for maximum photo detail
The Squareback has some strange attributes, probably a prototype.

Interesting pressing on the rear hatch, it also looks like VW used a notch latch for the locking mechanism. Groovy rear seat handle also. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.
