|
|
Two wooden scale models were made by the Porsche company sometime in March 1935 to get a visual feel for the design of the new Volkswagen. These models were later used as reference in construction of the very first two Volkswagen bodies in June 1935. I decided to make a replica of one of the models.
The models were photographed at the family home of Ferdinand Porsche in March/April 1935.
The scale model that represented the full sized car the most.
This sketch was made in February 1935. I decided to use it blown up to scale of 1:10 of the full size car. Chris Barber in his book states the scale was 1:5 but I have my doubts about the accuracy of that. Looking carefully at the background such as grass, stones and pebbles it seems the scale was smaller. I decided to go with 1:10 for convenience as the model will be just under 400mm long. Also I chose to use this early sketch because it perfectly shows the lines and proportions of the V1 cars. I just have to be careful with some of the details which were not carried over to the wooden models and the real cars.

That is seriously impressive! I look forward to seeing further progress -- and the finished model. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

Thanks guys. It is a fun project an most importantly to me it takes me back to the earliest beginnings of the Volkswagen. Early 1935 was a time when the a relatively definite image was penned in the sketch I posted above and the two scale models provided a visual cue to the full sized bodies that were shortly made by Daimler-Benz in their Sindelfingen factory. |

Working on the windscreen. I decided instead of cutting into the wood, build up the windscreen surround. This area is quite complex consisting of three layers so I thought this approach would give a better result.

That's so true BB! Sculptors have worked by that adage for thousands of years. In my case I'll also need to add material in some areas. |

Sadly I don't have a lathe so the next best thing is a drill press. One headlight almost done and the other waiting its turn.
Both headlights finished! They will be test fitted up later.
I did the wheels the same way. Files and a chisel work well.
Those wheels are 17" scaled down 1:10. That was the size used back in 1935.

Excellent work. I'm curious about the final touch, will you stain or paint? _________________ Prosit!

No it's not. I have built scale models before but those all were kits. I did do plenty of modifications to them so I have some experience in several techniques. This one however is the first I'm building entirely from scratch.
Wood work is in my genes too as my dad is a carpenter.
This is a very interesting project to me as I can explore most of my previous experience plus go into uncharted territory as well. |

Thanks. The original model was painted in a very dark color, presumably black so I'm going with that. The wood is pine so not too good for quality carving and finish. It only acts as a base with all the details done in body filler. Yes, it's gonna be finished in bondo! I guess I'm not the only guy to do that! |

Some more work done. I cut in the side windows with a router (was too much concentrated on the job to take photos of the process).
I also machined the headlight holes with a rotary rasp. Test fitted the headlights but they'll have to go in a little deeper.
It's really starting look the business.
From the front it looks like a surprised frog. My wife thought it's face was like that of a sex doll! I just love that dirty-minded woman!
