Roman’s Rust Bucket ('67 Beetle)

Hello Guys! After looking on Craigslist for about 1 year, researching about VW restorations, and VW's in general, I finally got my first VW Beetle. It's a 1967. After looking on Craigslist for a while, I finally found one that is close to me for a reasonable price. I picked it up for $2000 last November from a guy who lives about 15 minutes away from me.

Fast forward to now, I took the engine out, re-honed the cylinders, installed new rings, and cleaned all of the grease off.

I also rebuilt the solex 34 pic-t 3 carb and had the heads rebuilt

I am now also in the process of repainting all of the engine tins

I'll post more pictures once I'm done assembling the repainted engine

If body and chassis have little or no rust, then great deal.

I love 67's. I'm on my 4th and last!

Your tin work looks nice and clean.

Get a distributor that matches your carb. The dual port 1600(assumed) will run sooooo much better.

I installed a Bosch 034 German distributor on a friends 66 with the same carb a year ago. He loves how the engine runs.
This was after he insisted his engine ran great with the Oh Oh 9.

I carry a Oh Oh 9 as a backup. For those just in case roadside moments.

Make sure the preheat pipe on the intake manifold is clear .

Thank you for the compliments! I've put in as much work as I can between school, flying, cross country/track, and practicing piano. I'm on spring break now, so I've been able to get a lot done. I plan on getting a different distributor that matches the carb. Before I painted the intake manifold, I checked if it was clear. It wasn't, so I took some strong "garage wire" and cleaned it out with a drill. I'll hopefully have it running by tonight, I just have to put the fan shroud on and finish putting everything together.

I finished repainting the engine a while ago, but this is what it ended up looking like. Now it’s time to remove the body and repair all of the rust.

You got an awesome deal. If this were my bug and it was my only air-cooled vehicle , I'd pop the engine back in and run it for the summer. Then save the body off work for the winter months.

I’d save the body work for the winter months, but I’m in school during that time and I’ll be studying a lot.

Over the past week it has been pretty rainy, so I wasn’t able to get too much done.

I was able to build the dolly for the bug during the rainy days. This picture doesn’t show the finished product, but it’s the best I have.

Yesterday, I removed the body from the chassis with help from my brothers and hydraulics.

I’ll get a parts order going, so that I can get to the body work as soon as possible!

Haha exactly! My family and I are going to Germany for 3 weeks, so that’s less time that I have to work on it this summer. But...while I’m over there, we’re going to a big aircooled VW show in Mannheim! I’ve ordered all the metal, so once we get back I’ll start doing the metal work. Hopefully I can finish it up this summer. I’ll have 5 weeks once I get back. Hopefully that’s enough time for my brothers and I to finish the metal work.

This summer flew by, but I managed to work on my '67 a little bit.

Once the chassis was removed from the body, I power washed it and cleaned the really greasy parts with oven cleaner.

My family and I flew to Germany to visit family for 3 weeks. The landscape is really pretty over there. Plus, we saw a bunch of cool old German stuff that my relatives own.

We visited relatives in Berlin. Saw some pretty cool stuff at Checkpoint Charlie.

After visiting relatives, we went to climb a couple mountains. These are pictures of Herzogstand and Heimgarten.

...it's supposed to say Weissbier, but the guy we ordered it from messed the shirt up haha

The last week being there, we visited family friends who own a carpenter shop and he had these cool old motorcycles that he restored. I believe that the green one is a 1935 motorcycle.

When I got back to the US, my parts arrived and I could finally dig in. Sadly, I only had 3 weeks left of the summer.

These were terrible welds, so I cleaned them up. This picture was before I did that.

I got quite a bit more done, I just need to take pictures of it. The chassis is now fully painted, and I've removed one heater channel. Additionally, I removed the rear quarter panel of that side, and I sand blasted/painted that side. The next load of pictures will show that...when I get around to taking them.

Glad to see some stuff getting done. Was the shirt made in Germany? He may have used a capitol b for the double s, which is this in German ß. It's called an eszett. Trip sounds like fun, would love to visit there one day.

Nice looking bug. I have a Euro 67. I think it is the same color. Do you have the color code?
