Has anyone done this who is out there in samba land? Never owned a Webor IDF but would love to get into them if I could improve my fuel economy. _________________ If your into busses youve got issues and you likely don´t know it yet. - El_Güero
The question of whether the resulting usage is "correct" or "incorrect" depends on one's notion of correctness. |

You really need a wideband to tune anything in general but in the 20+mpg range with duals is pretty common. |

Believe it or not you can get better MPG with dual carbs than with any single carb. If you are wanting to use just a single IDF then there is no magic in them. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Here's a thread on MPGs with different engine/carb combos.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=493938
It is a bit dated so some of the numbers may have changed with the use of modern fuels (ethanol enriched), but from a quick review it appears stock engine combos (with vacuum advance distributors) may squeak out more MPGs than dual 2bbl carbs. Most duals seem to have MPGs in the mid 20's while stock 1bbl carbs are in the upper 20s to mid 30s for freeway miles.
Of course... YMMV.
I recall an old article about someone building an ACVW engine (in a Ghia?) designed for MAX fuel economy getting 40MPG+(?). There is a magazine article on it somewhere?
This is NOT that article but I found this on the aircooled.net site:

You mean this one?

Yeah there are a FEW "MPG nuts" as I call them, running IDfs.
Probably the smarter variety of them.
36 idfs tuned for lean cruise, and a GOOD adjustable ignition system, should be able to beat or equal any other setup for MPG. Really.
And someday, far in the future, you'll save enough gas to recoup the cost.
BUT IT DOESEN"T Matter, do it cause it feels good! |

There is a statement in this article that it is possible to get good MPG from a Weber progressive (DFEV 32/36) carb by tuning the primary barrel for very lean cruise and set up the secondary for power on demand. This seems like a very good idea giving you the flexibility for fuel savings as long as you can keep your "lead foot" off the pedal.
The only downside is the challenges that come with keeping the progressive intake hot enough to prevent fuel condensation. This requires heat risers from the exhaust manifolds, or some other heating systems for the intake. _________________ AshMan40
