Looks like a mostly complete 69 Square to me.
Look it over real good for rust, as I'm sure there's more hiding than you can see. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I guess I should explain, since I'm restoring a 66 SB I've met a few guys with type 3s in the area and we all need some parts. I've already dismantled a well rusted 69 SB, many of the parts live on in my 66, Rob's hood and wheels, Tom's fender etc. This car came to the seller in a garage of a house he bought, It's been sitting 30 years. The pics on Craigslist were bad, the seller didn't know much, it was close by so I had to go take a look.
The hood doesn't open, and is dented in pretty good. The spare is in the spare well so I'm not sure how I'm going to get the hood open, but I can't wait to see what is in there. The pans have no holes that I could see but the fenders are all shot. I do have a few spare fenders sitting around from the other 69. It may or may not come with a title, I'm guessing that won't matter.
My goal is to get it back on it's wheels, get it on my trailer and bring it home. I'll strip it down, take off the fenders and carefully inspect the body. I need a nice black interior for my 66, and the dash looks amazing. The bumpers seem untouched but lots of surface rust, I think Rob needs some cores. If the pan is solid, and the body repairable I'll clean it up and sell it to someone else who will have a clear vision what they are getting. If I do resell it I'll likely leave all the original parts so the new guy can make it correct. If it goes to pieces, I'll be letting ya'll know about it via the Samba Classifieds!
The one thing for sure is I won't be trying to repair this car, someone else can or it will get parted. |

Do a search of how to get the front hood open, by drilling a hole to release the latch. Although, maybe with 2 people, 1 can pull the cable, while the other lifts the front open.
I think you could probably make some money off it parting it out though, so I don't believe you'll loose any money. I can't think of the guy's name who is in Indiana or Illinois, but there's someone looking for parts in the general area.
Sounds like you have a plan of attack going, so I'll just sit back and watch. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I went and got her, it was a challenge but I have been rewarded! Sorry Rob and Jimbo but I'm saying this beautify 69 SB is staying together! Wow, is she solid in the right spots! The bad rust is at the tops of the front fenders and bumper mounts up front. The floor pans and rear look really really good. The front end with the bumper mounts is shot but I have a solid front apron and bumper mounts to put in. I winched it up on the trailer with 3 of the 4 wheels frozen, lubed the ramps with glycol because there was not other options, there is a good use for coolant to get old stuck VW's moving! I'm gonna shop vac it out, maybe pressure wash her and get it up on a lift. The bends in the hood and roof are from debris set atop for decades. I'm hoping it won't be bad to pop them out. Ya have to love the "We saw Europe by Volkswagen" and "International Tourist Delivery" decals! The hood is open but only revealed a giant mouse nest and a couple of empty dog food bags. What a horrible pest attractant to put in a car for storage!

Some pics of recent progress, I set a personal record for amount of mouse poops vacuumed, I love the automotive archeology! She's been stored for 30 years, many ways a time capsule. I'm loving it. Jimbo came over today to buy a old windshield (!!) but re-keyed my new 69 with my old 68 stuff and for the first time in 3 decades the steering rack will get exercised! Progress!

I had a long chat with the original owner's son, and he shared the tale of a European pickup and driving around Europe in this car when he was 6 years old. These pics are the first time this car has seen daylight in 45 years. (I dragged it out of the hoarder's garage and trailered it home at night).

There's an old saying "Buy rusty Not Wrecked".
Part of that is because all of these cars hide rust;
You're going to have to fix some regardless.
Might just as well weld big patches as small ones..
A complete/original car like that is getting ever harder to find these days.
Hoping you're not going to just part it out...! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Good grief man... by Ohio standards that car is not rusty AT ALL. The Tourist Delivery and MIA stickers really take me back... a lot of these cars were absolutely shot in the heater channels, floors, and upper/ lower fenders by the mid Seventies and junked so this one was not on the road long AT ALL. Please please please please don't part it... _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

The dash, yes... but look at the fucking door seal!!! Not to mention the factory moisture barrier and padding at the inside door release, etc. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

buy rusty not wrecked? I prefer the otherway, I'd rather buy a car that was wrecked than a rusty one, but whatever floats your boat

Praise Jesus you cleaned it! That was totally bugging me
What a cool piece of history tied to it. Never seen the Tourist sticker? What was it originally? Looks like white background with res water and wolf? Is the center blacked out?

Now that looks like a nice rebuildable survivor. The wash really cleaned it up too. You still have a bunch of work a head of you, but it looks like a great car to start with.
Looks like the hood dents came out just fine too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

IIRC the center is clear- it's been decades since I've seen one of those, though! It'd be nice to have repros. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
