Salutations. I'm new here but not new to the forum scene. I've been on the Volvo side of things for many many years, having a dozen of them.
However, thats what not brings me here. My uncle gifted a 78 Westfalia. It was used regularly and suffered some modest disrepair from being an aged camper.
It sat at my uncle's in Joliet, IL for half a decade, then another half decade in my brother's garage. Last night was the first time it ran in ~10 years. My brother is tackling the interior, I'm tackling the mechanicals of the chassis/drivetrain. We're based out of Janesville, WI. I was a WyoTech grad 15 years ago, worked at the dealership level for a couple years, then I've been with a bus company and now a propane business.
Sorry for the ginormous picture. Here it is in my brother's garage. Off of the wheel dollies.

Wow thats a nice gift! Lucky family you have now.
Good to see it so well kept and complete. The optional hub caps and yea, the odd 2 bumper thing add fun character. I'm sure many are eager to see more photos! _________________ Few will understand the passion and majesty, among the nuts and grease.

It does have 2 front bumpers. Hard to say what my uncle did, vs what the previous owners did. If you look even closer, you'll see that someone cobrifabbled a front spare tire bracket and mounted it to the top of the two front bumpers. So they seem there for structural support for the spare mount. I thought all of the Westys had those decals, and upon looking at the forum, I don't see any others. They are remind me of the Volvo Group A 242 stickers.
Theres a few other things on this VW that are cobbled in. A front coin basket where the front optional table goes, some corner round trim to save the veneer on the drawers, and the driver's seat belt is a hot mess. I'll definitely take some more/better pictures when I get back over to my brother's house. |

if these are things you consider cobbled, you are either doing fine, or haven't explored the wiring yet.

The wiring actually appears unmolested. Theres a few speaker wires ran, but thats it.
The driver's seat belt was cut across the chest at one point. It has clothes line-wire threaded through holes back and forth in a loose stitch and then is wrapped in duct tape. |

I can and will. At least until I make it over to my brother's. With any luck, we'll buy a house this summer, and then I can get more into it at my place. |

Welcome. I also have a 1978 purchased in the burbs of Chicago. If you need head work and such or a rebuild, I used MOFOCO in Milwaukee with good results.
Ratwell.com is a great source as was as the Samaba.

My other frequented forum (turbobricks.com) has 10 pic max. Not sure if this does too, so I split the post.

No limit to photos per post. Ten is a good round number though!
Do NOT loose those hubcaps, they are a pain to find! Kind of a one in 500 or so busses had them kinda thing.
Mk2 jetta seatbelts (85-91 jetta/golf 4 door) work fantastic in a bay, though youll need a simple L Bracket to mount them verticle. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
