Hello:
I need to find the actual part number spark plug to replace the plugs on a Mexican Beetle 2003. I found that the spark plugs NKG BP5ES-A can be used. But this spark plugs is kind of difficult to find. Please, let me know what is the cross part number of the NKG BP5ES-A that I can use safe on my Mexican beetle 2003. Thanks

BP5ES is recommended by NGK in case you can't find BP5ES-A, andit's what I'm running. However, I recently discovered BP5ES-A can be more easily found in motorcycle shops.

Here's a breakdown of how NGK part numbers are assigned. I don't see the -A suffix referenced in this spec sheet, I always thought it was a branding suffix.

I still have one pack of BP5ES-A left that are branded as VW:

it seems they are available on ebay in the US. you may have luck ordering them from a auto/bike parts store going by the NGK catalog number which is 2285 for the BP5ES-A

Hmmm, I always thought the value to the right of the "-" in the NGK part# represents different pre-gapped ranges for the same physical plug. The same spark plug used in different cars with different electrode gaps.

This should mean you can buy ANY BP5ES spark plug and just re-gap correctly for your engine.

I wonder if that "-A" just represents a special VW-branded boxed set of NGK plugs pre-gapped for Mexi-Beetles.

that was my understanding before I found the BP5ES-A. As soon as I can I'll try to post a pic or a video comparison. the -A definitely has a longer electrode tip.

Found this reference in the 2003 Mexi Beetle Owner's manual....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The line "Bujías" is "(Spark) Plug" and shows Champion N 12 YC.

Though, I couldn't find an exact cross reference, I think because of the more granular Champion heat range.
    Champion N11YC = NGK BP6ES
    Champion N14YC = NGK BP5ES

My point is the BP5ES (or BP6ES) is the actual recommended spark plug from VW and there is no need to chase the -A version.

I suppose you could actually hunt down some Champion plugs... but I never seriously considered running that brand in my ACVW. I like Bosch, NGK and maybe ND.

What ever brand you choose, confirm the gap is correct before installing. I always check even though they typically come gapped correctly (at least NGK did).

I've changed the plugs twice in my car, the first time I used BP5ES that I was able to buy at a local auto parts store. I think I paid around $12 (Canadian) for 4 plugs.

The second time I used a set of BP5ES-A that I bought from Antonio (can't remember what I paid), I have not noticed any difference with performance between them.

The next time I swap out the plugs, I probably just pick up a set of BP5ES locally.

I do have the extra set of BP5ES-A's, I'll keep them for spares.

as promised... hope the difference is noticeable (and also the reason why the -A and non-A works the same understandable)

NGK BP6ES for carburetor Sedan 1600 (1974-1992).

NGK BP5ES-A for fuel injected Sedan 1600i (1993-2004 domed pistons, hydraulic lifters, digifant system).

I’m having a difficult time finding the spark plug cables for the 1600i Mexican beetles. They use a Hall Effect Distributer where the top hat has a different style plug and the spark plug end grabs onto the threads of the plug. Anyone know the part number or where I can get them??

the 1600i parts catalog does not list the cable set but the single components;
However I bought a Bosch set from CSP of Germany, they list it as 998 031 ACD but I think it's their own stock number as I cannot find it in any other reference; in any case the bosch P/N is 0986MGO105. I also have a Beru set from Antonio, but I do not have a part number for that.
