I have a Bilstien VW jack I was thinking about modifying to work with my car but I don't want to cut it up if they are worth any thing.
I need to make it about 4" longer to get the back tire off the ground, I was think about cutting it off about 2" from the bottom and sleeve the outside with a 8" tube and welding it back together with a 2" overlap. I also want to change the socket on the car with something a bit stronger.
I have a couple of 48" Hi-Lift's but the are so heavy and if you don't build a HD mount they are a pain to deal with.
Any body have any pictures or ideas for modifying and mounting them?

Casey

I use a now old-school American car bumper jack.

It;s the horizontal gray bar. Wing nut holds it on a bolt welded to a bracket. Tab on the back end with a rod that has a shock mount rubber holds the top. Base plate mounts below. Handle stows inside the jack.

Mine is a Ford (like a Lincoln) from a wrecking yard. It has an extra large base plate. Weight is a tiny fraction of the High lift for my prerunner truck. I mounted mine inside off the cage.

You could make a stand to set the Bilstein jack in without modifying the original jack in case it ever becomes valuable if it isn't now. It could even fold up for stowage.

Is yours the kind that uses friction on the smooth shaft? Or is it one of the rotating handle screw type jacks?

If you only need 4", why not stash a 4" piece of wood and call it a day?

Also a bus jack would do it.

After you mentioned the screw jack type I forgot I had one of those too, I think it will be easier to modify. It has a square tube that is about 1 1/4" square and a piece of 1 1/2" x .125 sq tube should fit over it, I will cut the foot off and section in a piece of tube and weld the foot back on.
I am not going to mess with the friction jack, It may the type used with Porsche 356's, at least that what some of the pictures I have seen online look like.

Note that my bumper jack has a short piece of 1/2 tube welded to the lift. That's so it hooks on a Baja bumper. It's a little difficult to see in that picture because it's bright blue in front of bright blue. Interestingly, the jack body and base were pretty close to that blue from the factory.

I've also built them with a flat piece there. A piece of angle iron like 2" x 1/8" works for that.

Is that crank-type jack from a split window bus? If it's from a Porsche...Those folks just might spend stupid money for anything related to one. I remember right out of high school passing over a 356 ex road race car running and with American Mag wheels for $500. Now a car like that in the same condition would go for 6 figures.

Hahahhahah. I like it Cool

The extension looks well done. I like the slash cut to relieve stress at the joint that a straight cut would create.
