Great weekend for a cruise through the farmlands......sunshine, fresh air, no traffic, and the overwhelming smell of gas.
Another complete break down of a fuel line. Barely 2 years old, purchased from a reputable source. This was a close call, right above heater box. The hose appeared fine, no warning seepage...nothing. Was tank side at the copper pass through line, non-flared.
Photos show how quick these lines are destroyed by modern gas.
"TO FIT VW"
after removing the hose it literally unwind itself
German hose (left) which is maybe 6 years old next to crap hose
So I have declared, besides routine inspection, April 14th will be "Annual Replace Fuel Line Day" regardless. _________________ WWW.WESTCOASTBULLIES.COM

Or better yet, stop using fabric covered fuel line. As you can see, it's crap. It used to be the standard. No more.
The problem is finding a suitable replacement. Aeromech from the Bay Forum has had good luck with Honda fuel hose (made for modern gas), fit-wise and durability-wise. FWIW _________________ '71 panel, now with FI

I was thinking about posting about this.
I've been using the same regular Gates nylon reinforced fuel line on my bug for over 8 years now, and i regularly check the lines. No cracks around the clamp points whatsoever.
Ditch the cloth covered line and go Gates. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Flenor 5mm multifuel hose has been great. It's ethanol resistant to E85 and you can get it either braided or not.

The latest Gates Barricade offering seems to be holding up better than what they sold 4 years ago (it was dissolving from the inside into a chalky grit). I check mine regularly and so far so good. _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

Does the Gates 1/4" fit will over the stock fittings on a bus or did you also clamp them? |

I always clamp everything, and safety wire around the carb inlets.
Any Gates hose I use (not the FI stuff) does not crack around the clamps. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

I had to clamp the F out of it since it's larger, 6.3mm instead of 5mm.
It worked fine for years though and still looked perfect when I swapped it out.
Now I have 5mm line from the place above, fits much nicer. _________________ How to Post Photos

Just placed an order for a couple meters. Reasonably priced IMHO. Thanks SRFNDOC.

Happy to help. The last thing we need is to lose another bus to fire due to crappy fuel hose. _________________ RPM=(MPH*336* (R&P*4th*1.26))/Tire Diameter in inches |

Have had decent luck with the Continental 5mm hose for years, but may have to give that Flennor a try if it is more Ethanol resistant... |

I use 3/8" Gates rubber line and it's a tight fit, unlike the 1/4."
Harder to get off, but that may be a good thing, especially if you are not using clamps. _________________ WANTED:

Got this in the mail yesterday. If looks and feel count for anything, it's VERY nice stuff. I'll replace my lines this weekend and provide feedback accordingly. |

Seems like this is a good place for this PSA:
Safety wire your carb inlets! Or, replace the pressed in brass fitting with a threaded one. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.
