Hi. I picked up a 1972 oil bath air cleaner here on The Samba, and am restoring it.

There is a thermostatic valve in the lid of the air cleaner that is connected to a vacuum servo that operates a flap in the air intake. The vacuum source is off the intake manifold.

I have a Solex 30 PICT-3 carb with the throttle positioner on it that also uses the intake manifold as its vacuum source.

BTW - single port heads and a 205 M distributor in case it's relevant.

I theorize the 72 that the cleaner came off had a 34 on it that had a mechanical advance distributor or an SVDA that got its vacuum from the carb.

I don't have any data on what vacuum is developed at what ports anywhere.

My question is: Do you think I could use the angled vacuum port on the base
of the 30 PICT-3 as a source for the thermostatic valve on the air cleaner?

Thanks,
Jim

If the hole in the bore it's attached to is well below the throttle plate then yes, but most of those connected to a nipple on the side of the manifold a few inches below the carb.

Just use a T connector to split the vacuum signal from the ntake manifold port, one to the air cleaner and one to the throttle positioner. It will be fine.
