You could get a '65 through the Tourist Delivery program and this article makes it sound like '65s were available in the USA before 1966:

You couldn't buy one off a dealer's lot in USA until August 1965, for the 1966 model year. You COULD get them before that, as in Tourist Delivery as was previously pointed out.

Incidentally, Pigalles and Teaks were made as special models for the USA debut of Type 3s though they were available in Europe as well.

The Hemmings article is a bit "generic" but except for the 50 or so "1974" cars they inexplicably mention, they got the facts pretty much correct.

Sue got to drive that white Squareback of Ron's after the 2004 Type 3 Invasion. She drove it from the grounds to his house. I followed along in Ron's other car, that had it's FI resurrected from a multi year sleep on the show grounds earlier that day. We had a great time. Cool

Years ago I saw that cited elsewhere... something like the cars were built in the timeframe a '74 would be (late CY73), but titled a '73, maybe for emissions purposes... can't find the thread right now, but it's ringing a bell to me. I probably have the details wrong.

The last Type 3s rolled off the line in mid July 1973, just before the annual two week assembly line summer vacation/ shutdown for the next model year retooling. In this case they retooled for Passat (Dasher) production, so I don't see how that's even remotely possible.

For some reason the production chart here in the Tech section ends in December '72- this is not correct. Years ago, I bought a rolled '73 Vari as a parts car- it had a 07/73 build tag in the driver's door jamb. Wish I had saved it now. Crying or Very sad

True for Wolfsburg, but maybe some trickled out of Emden late in the model year? Just a thought. Might be a VW urban legend, too, even if I saw it here ages ago.
