How do you tell when you are looking at a stripped case? And do I want to try to build a trans from it?

That case looks like a single side cover case, which makes it IRS only.
I has been a lot of years, but IIRC the only difference is the pinion support. Swingaxle has 4 bolts that retain the pinion, IRS used a large nut to retain it.

Yup, that is an IRS only case. Good strong case you have there. Stiffer than the earlier cases, which had two side covers and were used for both IRS and swing axle.
