hi all,
Not to start a "what oil is best" style never-ending thread here, but I was wondering if there's any timing belt that's "better" than another?
(Cheap, Proste-quality made in China crap need NOT be mentioned please)
I've always used Conti-tech, but I have a new, made in the USA Gates TB here for my 1.6td I'm installing.
if someone has had an experience they'd like to share about a one TB over another, I'm all ears.
A vender on here advertised one as being "quieter" than another... (like you can HEAR a timing belt on a diesel that's running 12" behind you??!)
thanks,
Steve |

Speaking specifically about Conti vs. Gates - I've used both and have not had any issues with either one. I have also never seen a timing belt simply fail within the timing belt interval without some other cause (e.g. oil leak on belt, bad tracking, excessive tension, etc, etc...). It's my opinion that whatever quality difference there might be between them is arguable and much less important than other factors like getting the belt tracking set right, making sure the tension is not too tight (or too loose), making sure the timing covers are fitted correctly, addressing any potential leaks onto the belt, making sure the cam taper surfaces are completely clean and free of any oil residue, etc, etc...
I can't imagine how anyone can hear the difference between two timing belts over the general racket of the engine running. That just seems silly to me. |

I tend to like to go to dealers for timing belts and timing belt kits, as all the bits and pieces are more apt to fit and the quality is there. |

Thanks Andrew and wild things
I figured this would be the case. I know there's other decent brands out there, (Flemming?) but I stick with Contitech under most situations.
I have not checked the tracking yet... but there’s no oil in the motor, so I’m not turning it over even by hand... I’ll look into that pressurized oiling system
In a can, then mess with the tracking.
Regards
Steve

As your installing a new belt remember to check an readjust the tension as the belt will stretch as it breaks into it mundane life. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.
