Rocky Jennings has all the parts and cutter sets. Also he has a good thrust cutter. I'm sure he can spec out the other cutter sets, but usually if the blades are clean I just run them.
The one word of advice I was given, never forget a dowel pin, always double check.
I prefer the porta tool style more than the truline. |
Thanks!
I emailed Rocky right after reading your post. I have an order placed with him for replacement cutters and a thrust cutter.
When I was being taught to run the bar by the senior mechanic, he showed me a trophy case. It was one a green mechanic had tried to bore on his own, while he was at lunch. The green wrench forgot to remove all of the dowel pins. Ruined the cutter and screwed up the case! Thanks for the memory!
I have only ran the Porta tool. No experience with any of the other ones. It is simple and does a great job. Why go looking for something different? _________________ Jimbo

Update.
Rocky Jennings is a great resource for align boring parts. I purchased a set of new cutters and a thrust cutter. The thrust cutting bit which is part of the original Porta Tool bar, was not present when it was sent to me.
The new cutter came in today. Thanks Rocky! I got home at 6 and had the thrust cut with new bearing machined to match. Took about 30 minutes. Ended up going from 22mm to 21.83.
Since it has been so long since I have done this, I did screw up when I ran the cutter into the bearing. No Biggy. I will just get another bearing. Just fun cutting parts again.
Gave it around .0015 interference fit. Does that seem good. I could not remember how much it used to be.
