anyone have success with a type of paint for the bottom roller track under the sliding door? seems like it would be a brutal test of any coating.

Great Question... I’ve wondered this myself...All I can think of is a 2 part Epoxy Paint type thing. Good Luck buying a small inexpensive quantity for what we need with our VWs, no matter what it is
I need to address my slider in that area once I coax the Track Cover screws out of their rusted holes( they’re shy and don’t want to see the light of day).... Rolling Eyes
So this is a timely question for me too. Smile

Why not use regular paint and then cover with a strong tape? I used this kind of stuff on the roller tracks, it has held up nicely after a year of use, and helps reduce the metallic noise.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000REGUE4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This particular tape might only last a couple years, but maybe another stronger type could last several years.

edit: added the link to the UHMW tape

I put HDPE tape on the roller track just for experimentation, what a mistake. There is no material that can take the pressure under the bearing wheel. Get used to bare steel and oil it down as needed.

Was it Du Ponts Imron that I’m thinking was the old 2 part paint that dried pretty hard.
What we really need is the new film finishes that have been developed for engineered flooring material. Those clear coats are supposed to be really hard and even normal flooring sanding abrasives don’t remove them easily

Imron is a two part paint that’s pretty sturdy. I painted a motorcycle frame with it 25 years ago and it’s held up but still has chipped and worn.

Terry Kay used to tout its praises although I’m not sure it would be up to this task.

For clarification, "two-stage" implies a basecoat-clearcoat process where the paint must have clear atop the color.

The distinction here, as quoted, is Imron is "two-part;" meaning one mixes paint and a separate hardener with the thinner. "Two-part" does not imply using a clearcoat.

Imron is thus single-stage -- though I believe they make a clear for it if more depth is desired. It's good paint made by a great company, the first poly on the market if memory serves.

I suspect it'd be more durable than stock paint, but I don't know how one gets a gun to paint the slider channel. Our new van needs this attended to asap.

So far as removing the step rail, our screws are also locked on so I plan to drill them out to install a new rail some of us bought as a group buy (Thanks Again, Brandon!). Ours was intended for our first van so it'll be good to finally use it.

. I painted Industrial Conveyors years ago with a 2 PART paint from Du Pont years ago. It was not a regular paint in the fact that you had to add the activator to it, mix it thoroughly, then you could Spray it.
I thought it was Imron, but that was the middle 80s,,,, so time has gone by. Wink
I don’t remember mentioning 2 stage in my post, but as you noted , that’s a different thing altogether. Perhaps you were confused by the Flooring Finish remark.
That comes as a bit of a joke , I’ll need to explain . The newest prefinished flooring for high end or HD commercial usage has been touted by the manf. Reps at trade shows from what I’m hearing as practically unsandable by normal
Floor refinishing Abrasives. I don’t see a lot of Wisdom in that brag since if it’s possible to ‘outpace’ the very people your industry is relying on to keep the product looking good, but supposedly the new clears are just that tough.
Besides, you probably would have to wear a Hazmat suit and full respirator just to dab some on your sliding door parts with a brush .... Razz

My cover will need to come off for me to see how good , or bad, my rail is.
