Battery venting has been discussed a lot on this forum. Consensus is there is no consensus. I am a mechanical engineer and have designed many commercial battery charging facilities. I have also had two lead acid batteries installed in my van for the last 10 years. One behind the drivers seat and one under the sink. Neither has any special venting installed and neither is in a sealed compartment. I also have a shore power charger installed and charge very frequently.
In 10 years I have experienced nothing unusual in my van. No corrosion, no explosions, no off gassing. Nothing that would cause me to change my installation.
You can read about it here and in the linked topics: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=611850&highlight=vent
There is such a small quantity of gas given off by one battery it can be considered negligible. I wouldn't be concerned about putting this battery in your van. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

I have one of those batteries under the rear seat. No vent. _________________ Jim Crowther

I ran that same battery under my bench for several years. I drilled holes in the back wall to bring wires through, and drilled a couple of extra just for good measure. Never an issue.
The best, best thing about using a Group 27DC is that if it should ever peter out (mine finally did after years of hard use) you can get a replacement anywhere for $100. I replaced mine last summer at a regular auto parts store in Brookings, OR while on a long trip.
The way I see it, if these batteries are good enough for millions of john boat trolling motors, they're good enough for me. _________________ Joe T.

It's weird Walmart has two different pages with the same battery, as I noticed this same exact thing with a diff size battery. In this case, one does appear to have newer graphics
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Everstart-Maxx-Lead-Acid-Marine-RV-Battery-Group-29DC/131118029.
The link above - has several reviews stating that the battery is now 61lbs, and was 66 lbs., and doesn't last like their old one, but I can't say a Group 29 from someone else is much better, but weight might be the best comparison. However weight always seems to be lacking from the Walmart's, and others too, specs on batteries.
Tim, I'm surprised with your excess cash, you aren't getting one of these $2,700 lithium batteries!

I know! Should buy two I guess?
Walmarts site really does suck, the battery doesn't look anything like what is picture when you first click on the link.
The Q&A replies also suck. The expert answer doesn't seem to jive with what the actual answer is.
The one I am looking at has 105 AH and expert says 122 AHs. Also there is a vent on the top side going down the length side.
When I asked clerk about it he said that he has never smelled any gas coming from one these batteries.
Hydrogen gas is odorless and colorless and extremely flammable, I tell him. You know, what floated the Hindenburg and then it blew up.

Picked up the batteries the other day and had a chance to remove their predecessors and start to wire them up.
Bought some 3/8" ID tubing and a few fittings and was able to turn the Non-used City H2O inlet into battery venting.
Also added a screen to keep bugs out of the tube fill point. I had a small cork stuck in the hole so no water would get by.
Still waiting on cables to hook up the ACR and inverter again but I am pleased with the results so far.
Watched the charge controller and voltmeter this afternoon to see what the preliminary results would be and
voltmeter to CC readings are a lot closer than before. _________________ '15 Audi A3 Quattro

No. It does just fit under the rear seat lengthwise - but needs a small platform to sit on. _________________ Jim Crowther
