Hello all- I'm replacing the plugs (and just about everything else!!) in my kit car before putting it all back together. The engine had Champion RN9YC plugs (14mm dia/19mm or 3/4" reach). The Jbugs website says the standard plug for Type 1 from 1946-79 is W8AC which is a 12.7mm or 1/2" reach plug. 1/4" is a big difference and I always thought the reach was a pretty close tolerance thing.
I'm soliciting opinions here. What do you guys think about going to 1/2" reach plugs? Should I stick with the 3/4" reach? Let me know your thoughts!! -Mark |

Does your car have stock VW heads or are they aftermarket ones with longer reach sparkplug holes?
You need the correct reach plug for the depth of the holes in your heads. Using 3/4" reach plugs in heads designed for 1/2" can cause damage to the head's plug hole threads during removal due to carbon buildup on the plug threads -- if the chamber is tight enough, you can also have the piston contact the plug. Using 1/2" reach plugs in heads designed for 3/4" will contribute to poor combustion and likely foul the plugs prematurely. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Mukluk, that's right along the lines I was thinking. If the 3/4 plugs were in stock heads, they'd be banging the pistons!!
I have no idea whether or not they are aftermarket, though... |
