Picked up a 73 Type 2 Kombi yesterday, I hope that’s correct, had one when I was a kid. Drove home and the clutch cable bolt was weak and broke off leaving me stranded in street. Thankfully shop up street towed it over before wife came home. Is the clutch cable for a shop an easy fix? Just hoping this bus isn’t ruined over a simple cable? Sorry new to bugs, had one in high school but didn’t know anything about it nor had any money to barely buy gas. Bus needs some tic but besides the clutch issue and a new fuel filter it ran awesome and sounded good. Thanks for having me...Scott

Hi Brice, And welcome to the samba.
There is a dedicated thread for type 2's here.
Those guy's can answer your question on the broken bolt in your clutch system.

The cable itself is pretty easy to change, but it's a good idea to pay careful attention to the actuating arm at the front. I had to weld mine up and re-drill the hole because of the wear. _________________ '78 Bus 2.0FI

there are three parts that wear. The cable, the lever, and the clevis pin. If it was the cable that broke, make sure that the transmission ground strap is clean where it mounts to the body and the trans. If that fails to ground the engine then the clutch cable can carry the electrical load and heat up.
Here is an image one of the long time members here, Hazetguy, made to show how the lever should go. There are (two?) different levers depending on year, and same for the clevis pins. If the prior owner got it backwards that can break cables too.

time to break out the instructional drawings i did a while ago:
please note that in the drawings, the FRONT of the bus would be to the LEFT, the REAR of the bus would be to the RIGHT:

Welcome to the madness, get on your ASAP list to replace fuel lines - cheap, easy, and can help prevent a crispy bus. I would put this as priority number one. Like the clutch cable, this is something you can do yourself. I would strongly recommend getting a few manuals, basic hand tools, and develop an intimate physical relationship with your new friend. The best mechanic is the one that has a financial and emotional skin in the game. That's you. If wrenching is new to you, get the Muir and the Bentley. Aw hell, get them both anyway, as if nothing else, the Muir book is a good read for fun. Think about scheduling some time with Asiab3 (Robbie) and\or Amskeptic (Colin), the money spent for a day with them is well worth it if you are new to VWs.
Love the stance and tires. We need interior and motor pics. Please _________________ 1979 Transporter (sold)

If the pin broke, you can replace it with a bolt TEMPORARILY. Order the proper part asap and replace it. If you have the cash, replace all of the wear parts at once since you have to be crawling around under there anyway. Do yourself a favor and buy one of those sort of cross shaped clutch adjusting tools too. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Welcome to the Samba! Lot osf smart folks here that can help you enjoy the bus.
I always have a new clutch cable in my "bag of tricks" This little wingnut gizmo helps sometimes with your vicegrips on the cable. Good lubrication of everything really helps a lot.

welcome
going to give you a case of the may-as-well's here.
replace the cable, Bowden tube, cable pin (get the good one where the pin rotates) and look for wear on the lever (pedal side) where the above mentioned pin slides into. usually they are beat to fuck and all ovaled out. weld and re-drill your original. the aftermarket ones are made out of silly putty.

Welcome! I came across mine 21 years ago this month.
Dad had a red one when I was learning to drive.
Spent the past year and around $6K getting her going again.
It cost $8K first time around, but I built this motor and put the savings
towards items I didn't replace during the first 228K miles.
Enjoy!!! _________________ I know the pieces fit, cos I watched them fall away.

Thanks for the warm welcome gang. I panicked when it broke as I had just bought it , so I called the shop up the street, they towed it to their shop and said the clutch issue shouldn’t be a problem, if they are complete dipshits I’ll have them tow it to a bug guy also in town. Just pissed me off as I went to drive it and it broke before the check to the guy was even cashed oh well welcome to owning old stuff. Iam not a mechanic and don’t know a ton about cars but I also don’t wanna pay somebody 200$ each time something simple breaks or what have you. Interior wise it needs some new windows, prob a radio and some wiring I think for interior lights to work. Also who do you guys buy from I see so many ads for vw stuff but don’t want Chinese knockoff stuff and would rather buy from people you guys suggest and wanna support. That’s all for now , stick your head in the cockpit sometime and ask if it’s scott from Idaho !!! And again thanks for warm welcome and not jumping my shit over my ignorance about the clutch cable !!! |

Greetings and welcome from another 73 owner.
No sweat on not being knowledgable of everything from the start -- Everybody starts from somewhere. I'm no stranger to a wrench, but personally more on Jeeps and British stuff than VW. I'm learning on my bus as I go, like you. I strongly suggest learning how to do things yourself, and spending a lot of time here on the Samba. Incredibly knowledgeable and helpful folks here.
Good luck! Looks like a great bus!

If you over tighten the Oil Strainer bolt, you will brake the engine case!
There is a Oil strainer in there.
TORQUE THE STRAINER BOLT TO NO MORE THAN 9 FT. LBS. |

It is home!!!
Clutch cable reattached correctly
Some here’s the verdict
Needs oil change
Tune up
New ball joints said dry and the seals are cracked or pulled apart or something
And some much needed TlC
As I said in my intro, iam not a wrench guy so ball joints and tune ups I will pay somebody, as for the interior where can I find new panels?
New window roller uppers the gear just clicks like it’s missing. Also the oil light came on during a low idle then extinguished, what’s up with this light , obviously low oil and a needed oil change asap. Not driving a ton since I wanna find more about this oil light coming on. Besides that the guy left me a whole box of new taillight and other accessories
Always accepting positive feedback and suggestions. Part where to buy specific ally

Please chime in with the oil light I mentioned, maybe a solid oil change and tune up would rid the issue. The kids love it we sat in garage and I showed them stuff ..also the back tail lights, I have to stick head in engine to undo those 4 bolts, seems like an easier way |
