So you know how Buggin' goes, sometimes strange things stick to you when all you wanted was a pair of fenders, or a hood, or...

For example, last summer I had gone for a hood for my 72 Super (its a unicorn hood, unique to the flat window Super) and as I was loading up the truck with the doors, engine, etc. etc. that happened to come with it, I hear this: "do you want some chickens?" What? OMG I love those birds now, getting half a dozen eggs a day.

But this is not about my air-cooled birds...

I got some fenders and this thing stuck to me on the way out. What is it?????

From Singlewheeltrailer.com http://www.singlewheel.com/ it appears to be a Phoenix single wheel trailer.

I have seen something like this pulled on a bus, but can it be used with a Beetle?

The reason I ask is it is falling in love with my '61 Deluxe.

Is it valuable? I see on SingleWheelTrailer.com the remnants of a Samba ad where it looks like the fellow Sambanite was asking $4,500 or trade for a complete oval window? Is that for real? Many years ago and Ovals are high now but still, is this Trailer all that?

Anyway, I thought I would share the pictures and see what I could learn.

Thank you all!!!!

Hard to know what a market price might be just because they were sold to everybody in the US- and not as a VW accessory. But yours requires a lot of bodywork to be a multi-thousand dollar trailer. I saw one at Pomona about 10 years ago for 1k- and I thought it was a great deal but it was really nice.

Ten years is a long time though. And yes- it is easily pulled by a VW beetle. The bumper bracket height may require a little fudging.

Thanks HiTest. It's fun learning about something new. The one piece that seems to be missing is the bracket that gets bolted (I imagine) to the car. The trailer has a clamp that attaches to something. So fabbing the bumper bracket from scratch will allow it to be any height needed to level the trailer on the car.

That's cool as hell! I think any single wheel trailer has got to be worth $1000 - $1500 if it can be pulled down the road. It's hard to say if being something a bit odd-ball makes it worth more or not but, I'll bet the cost to restore it would far outweigh the value. I'd rock it just like that. A new tire and bearings, and you can come up with some sort of hitch system.
I made my ratty looking Allstate into a camping kitchen to tow behind my Bus. There are lots of options to make it useful.
Keep us updated on the progress!
