My 1991 Jetta 1.8l keeps blowing the oil filter gasket does anyone know what would cause this

What filter are you using? The over pressure valve is in the oil pump. If that is stuck, that certainly could cause the filter to blow.

I suggest you purchase a Mann filter. If they do not have one at your parts department, you are shopping at the wrong place.

X2! The metal on cheap ass oil filters is too thin & will distort to the point that they will blow the seals. Squeeze the filter by hand, if you can dent it or feel it yield, throw it away.

I put a wix filter on it, I cleaned out the oil filter adapter now everything is working perfect. Thank you
