California, being California, has mucked up it's "high speed rail" project and should cut it off ASAP. It was put to voters as a stand-along high-speed rail ten years ago promising to be in operation with an LA-SF time of a little over 2 hours, for a cost of $33B, by 2020.

Now it will share low-speed rail lines, meaning it's more like a 5-hour trip LA-SF when the system is done, with only a short segment being high-speed (this is the "train to nowhere, going from Fresno to Bakersfield). I can make that time in my car.

Oh, and the cost has gone up to $99B.

It also will operate at a loss, requiring perpetual taxpayer subsidy.

All these faults were predicted but denied by politicians bought off by the major construction and operator companies, who smelled fresh green taxpayer dollars.

Funny thing is, the Chinese proposed a no-taxpayer funded LA-Vegas line, which would operate at a profit. It was turned down, probably at the urging of those who wanted the fat taxpayer contracts instead. How is it the commies understand the free market better than we do?

Sort of soured on high speed rail here now...

High speed rail is only something the Legislature wants. It doesn't make any sense to me at all. most if not all public trains in this area (SF Bay area) are operating at a loss and are therefor subsidized.

They even proposed to drag those tracks through the wine county and a regional park in my area and the shit hit the fan.

They should scrap it and the stupid water grab delta tunnel BS.

Yeah, them rich folks don't want to be in easy access to the hood.

Several years ago, a local mall tried to discontinue the bus service to the mall, it seems that there was a direct correlation the rates of shoplifting to the days & times that the busses would arrive from certain neighborhoods. That started a racial shitstorm.

Let’s just say that I wouldn’t tell anyone I thought much of to use the busses in LA. Laughing

I just watched a 90 min video on all of what you just said...crazy that the plug wasn't pulled already. what a waste...

like I said...the foresight of mass transit was lacking when we were getting our infrastructure. European countries for sure have us beat in that regard.

I wanted real life stories...hence the thread. lots of CA people here.

not for nothing...I WISH I had the power to force assholes into fixing their CEL's....or scrap their rotted out shitbox....but I don't...

this is how my world plays out...

customer: I have a CEL on can I bring it in?

me: sure

me: run a series of tests. find a bad catalytic converter

me: you need a cat conv

cust: how much?

me: parts are 1900 plus the possibility of o2 sensors being stuck...parts and labor worst case scenario 3300 plus tax

cust: oh, it runs fine. I just went thru emissions...I have 2 years to make a decision

me: facepalm

so....oddly enough...I would LOVE a bit more regulation. so in the above example the cat isn't working properly, the ECU defaults to a limp home programming stopping o2 sensor regulation and this asshole is out running around for the next 2 years...

Holy hell? $3300 for a cat? The gubment is definitely YOUR friend in this instance

The same thought went through my mind but then I don't know prices in your part of the world. I do know that if it was my car it would have been pulled out for a second opinion. I got stung once $5000 for a set of diesel injectors on a Cummins and wished I had done that.

A year ago we paid $4800 for an mint '02 VW with 45K miles on the clock so, ya if it was an older car that new cat at $3300 would make it a right off! Drive it till it drops.

While it sounds like an over-the-top quote for a catalytic converter, the cost of a dealer part is outrageous & it's easily 2/3s the cost of the quote. Sure, you can get an aftermarket one for $200-$300 but you'll be replacing it every 6-7 months because they are such a POS.

exactly...and when you tell a client this, they forget in 6 months...and you're the jerk. and there is NO WAY I am doing a integrated manifold/cat twice. it saves no one any money.

every fit an aftermarket part to your vw and want to slam it into the wall? imagine that X10 on a high end euro that has all sorts of brackets and shields that need to line up. no thanks...dealer only.

I could have used an example of a bad tank pressure sensor which is on the top of the tank, requires the whole AWD system to be removed, rear cradle and tank dropped to gain access...

anyway...what will total a car is MB using a fuel pump that is part of the tank...and about a 6K+ job

Apples and oranges, though, if by "MB" you mean Mercedes- Benz... what will likely happen with MB in a scenario like this is one of two things:

1. They'll overengineer it as usual, and it'll be bulletproof, or

2. If it does prove troublesome they'll recall for retrofit OR they'll do a perpetual warranty, like they did with Diesel trap oxidizers in the 1980s.

I used to fix Large Format Epson Printers. If Epson ever designed a car, you would have to remove the motor and trans to change a taillight bulb. Terrible designs

He should be pissed. Its a joke and all prior to his being governor. I don't know why Brown was so damn set on the high speed rail and delta tunnels. Newsome has at least cut both projects by half or damn near.

There are a ton of farmers and one guy in particular who stands to make a fortune on water if those tunnels happen. The water rights in this state are ridiculous but all you see down I5 are signs "Food grows where water flows". yeah we need that many almonds...

WTF?? If they're growing them, we do.
Confused

Again, private property rights are THE FOUNDATION of this country. Without those, we have nothing. If the man owns the land, and wants to grow almonds, so be it. I don't care how much water it takes. Stop building 10,000 unit apartment complexes here in LA if there's no freakin' water. Almonds before immigrants. Don't make me adapt that as my sig line.

We don't. "The man" couldn't grow his almonds if we didn't fund a system to get water to him through aquaducts, pipes and the like. His need doesn't supersede the need of others who's water is being diverted for his trees.

80% of water goes to ag for crops, a lot of which are sent overseas. we grow 80% of the WORLDS almonds and export 70% of what we grow. Aquafers are also not just in cute little parcels of land. I'm not talking about property rights, i'm talking about water rights.

I get you don't care about how much water it takes but that is no different than your apartment complex analogy. That land owner needs water to turn a profit just like the almighty farmer does. If anything the farmers exported almonds are helping fuel the bodies of those illegals to run across the borders!

Perhaps water rights should be on a seniority system. First come, first served.

I know this has nothing to do with the intended thread but it seems it went this way, with regards to water usage rights.

https://www.motherjones.com/environment/2016/08/lynda-stewart-resnick-california-water/

I don't know how these two are not in jail for some of the outright scandals they are involved with when comes to water usage in CA.

I think there is a Netflix documentary on them as well, I refuse to buy Fiji brand water or anything from any other company they have their hands in, I know I am just one person but I do vote with my wallet. If everyone did, this crap wouldn't happen, being a responsible consumer is often tedious and inconvenient but its our responsibility to do so. I know they are many more companies like this, just illustrating this one due to water issues being brought up.

Mother Jones? (cringe)

And don't forget the fact that California lets jillions of gallons of water into the sea for the 'Delta Smelt'.

A better investment than shipping it south so you can water your lawn.
