Well I wonder if the 1600 and the 36 horse can use the same cam gear if sreight cut? Really? I don't know. Says here that the stock gears are different between those engines. Need help with camshaft part numbers. |
The 1600 straight cut gears will fit in the 36hp case ...i was just wondering if any one use these aluminum ones.. I have seen steel on steel straight cut gears but not aluminum ones ...

I put an aluminum gear in one of my 1600 based engines but it's Stock Pitch. Aluminum is stronger than magnesium but softer. I usually just stick with the old gears they are almost always good. I don't know maybe not with dual valve springs or something. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

I had an aluminum cam gear in my 1776 before I rebuilt it. A few teeth were chipped off but it still ran fine. I put a steel straight cut gear set in so I don't have to worry about that happening again. _________________ 36hp '56 European DeLuxe oval, '70 bug 1835cc dual 36DRLA, and a '98 4x4 5spd single cab Tacoma |

It's hard to beat stock 36hp/Porsche 356 gears. These have reduced helix from 40hp & later gears, yet aren't noisy like straight-cut. The only time straight-cuts are "needed" are when valve spring pressures are extremely high. JMHO _________________ aka Pablo, Geary
