Rims/wheels? No.

Tires? Yes, recommended replacement at 6 years.

Rims expire on a regular basis here in Michigan, it's the potholes. Wink

A few years ago, when I needed tires for my Thing, I traded my "never been down" original spare tire and wheel to Ron for a stock Thing wheel.
Ron has a collection of original tires and wheels, and mine was basically useless to me, except it was a nice decoration in my trunk.
For the last 25 or so years, I had been driving all over the country without a spare tire; at least without a spare tire that was reliable for highway use.
So when I bought new tires, I just got 5 of them, instead of 4, so now I have a good spare.

Glenn-
The World's Motor Capital sits 1200 feet above the Detroit Salt Mine; covering over 1500 acres with 100 miles of tunnels.

We make the cars, and the salt that eats 'em; sort of a "one hand washes the other" type of deal.

The industry says they should be installed within 6 years, but doesn't say how long they can be kept in use.

My tires and spare are also long out of date. I check them regularly for signs of dry rot and other issues but since they have plenty of tread I have no intention of replacing them until they shows signs of needing replaced.

...and the same industry safety groups state that if your tires are 6 years old or older they pose a greater safety risk of blowing out and therefore should be replaced.

Shelf life is a whole different discussion. I have had issues with the shelf life of batteries. Needed a battery for my Vanagon in 2017 and the one that was in stock at my local Walmart was already two years old based on its date code sticker showing it was manufactured in 2015. I took a pass and found a fresher one at my local NAPA.

The tires on my Thing and on my Vanagon are all well out of date but have plenty of tread. I check them regularly for dry rot and other issues but as long as they are not cracked, leaking or balding I'll keep driving on them.

Unless your vintage VW is your daily driver odds are your tires are going to expire before you wear them out.

I suppose all of this depends on how you use your car.
If you just drive it around town to go get ice cream, old tires are fine.
If you take road trips, and spend hours on end at freeway speeds, it's a good idea to keep your tires current.
I would hate for my last thought on this Earth, while lying upside-down and bleeding to death to be "Gee-whiz..I wish I had bought new tires". Wink
