It wasn’t that long ago the girls’ reaction would have been the opposite. More along the lines of “Ewww!”
And the hippy label is a slur to many.
I’ve always thought the abundance of big windows on VWs keeps them from Creeper status. It’s those panel vans that are scary. Who knows what’s going on in there. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

That'd be me. Ive been called a gravel back. 4 months out of the year at least . Once there were too many kids in the family dad sold the TR 7 and bought a late 60s dodge van. He promptly installed 6 airline seats from Boeing surplus in the back. It was cool to have flip down tray tables. Later during our corvair era we were driven around in a Greenbrier, didnt think it was as cool. |

That's a definite association considering some of the drivers I 've seen parking them lately.
The older faded paint Chevy and GMC panel van, even with the windows parking in a parking lot just visually brings condemnation from most everyone seeing them. If any enter the area where I stay I just move to another location immediately. I do not want to be associated with them. _________________ This free advice is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Just last night while getting into bed I heard through the open window some kids walk by, “What a dope van!” Maybe because in the dark they can’t see how rough the finish is. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

Sure, in my case it was likely a hand me down. With all of us there definitely wasnt any free candy in it! We wouldve been screaming "Mom! Mom! Theres free candy in that van over there!" |

That's where spending $135,000 on a new converted Sprinter "makes sense", nobody thinks people with money to spend on items of conspicuous consumption are creeps.
Quote: |
Conspicuous consumption is a term introduced by the Norwegian-American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his book “The Theory of the Leisure Class” published in 1899. The term refers to consumers who buy expensive items to display wealth and income rather than to cover the real needs of the consumer. |

My interp of Jack's comment was "Odds of being concerned for our personal safety decreases with those of clear financial success compared to someone in a 'Free Candy' van."
Which is correct, in my experience anyway. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

Don't count on it. Creeps come from all walks of life. Having money just makes it easier to get away with it. Heck, they even get themselves elected.... _________________ Currently:

Exactly.
An obviously exceedingly expensive sprinter "camper" will never draw the scrutiny from society as a whole that a "free candy" van will, there is no arguing this point. Any further discussion on this topic is redundant or wrong _________________

Unfortunately it's true there is a perception that someone with money will be more morally upright, however one has only to pay attention to the news in the past few days to know it's not true.
The individual who was arrested with child pornography of small boys on his cell phone is a wealthy confidant of, and working for, heads of state.
While we as a community of Vanagon owners may like to feel superior to driver's of ratty old American panel vans it's statistically probable that there is at least one "creep" driving around in a Vanagon. _________________ Currently:

Yep, and generally people in sprinters are not deemed "creepers".

Oh, certainly, and I never meant to imply that there are no creepers in Sprinters, just that society is much much less likely to view people driving $100,000+ sprinters around as creepers, but I think if I interpret the original post correctly this thread is about how the general public perceives people who own vans, not whether or not those perceptions are accurate or not. _________________
