I have a Scat 45-002 dual point distributor on my 2276. From my understanding it is a clone of the Mallory unit. If this is true, will this drop in?
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Mallory-Unilite-E-Spark-Ignition-Module-6100M-p/6100m.htm
If it WILL drop in, what are the opinions for or against using this distributor vs going CB Magnaspark? Not looking for the electronics vs points debate, just want knowledgeable opinions/experience between the two.
Carbs are 44idf, unknown cam and CB 044 heads, sidewinder exhaust if it makes a difference.
Plan is to R&R the engine next month and want to freshen up a few things. I have a Pertronix flamethrower coil that I was going to use.
Thanks I’m advance. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

My understanding is they are Mallory units just rebadged.
I would ask John C. about the module. _________________ Glenn

That’s what I’ve read as well, but we all know the internet lies. 😂
I’ll shoot him an email if he doesn’t respond here. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

I have an old scat single point distributor and it’s just a Mallory. Takes the same parts and everything. |

Yes the Scat and Truhauf are manufactured by Mallory and resold with a new badge. All Mallory tuning and tune up parts fit.
The part you linked to is just a replacement module, what you need is the conversion kit.
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Mallory-Unilite-Conversion-Kit-562-p/562.htm
Between this and the Magnaspark, each have easy to adjust mechanical advance systems and are quality units.
Which is better, can of worms here but...
If you did convert to the unilite, I feel the spark is more stable, less scatter and almost no variation between cylinders. The dual points, if kept, will provide a longer opportunity to fully charge the coil at high RPMs.
The magnetic pickup of the Magnaspark is likely more tolerant to heat and dust. With either, make sure you use the appropriate 3 ohm coil. _________________ 1957 Oval rag

Ok. Unfortunately the conversion kit is showing Unavailable with no restocking ETA. I may just stick with the dual points for a bit and change it out later.
Thanks for the replies. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

I ran a mallory twin point on a 2276 with IDA's. I will admit I was in the tuning stages but was fairly close to the final jetting. It ran nice but fowled the plugs a bit. Swapped to a CB Magnaspark and it ran so much better it was amazing. |

You need the parts what will fit a Mallory YL-25 style. I have the part numbers for the caps and rotors, but the points and condensers I always got from Mallory. I messed around with quite a few of them 8+ years ago. With lots of tinkering they can work good, but they are still low power. I ended up getting a module from Summit, but that was a long time ago, and hard to find then. Mallory was bought out by someone else, and they drop lots of the good old parts.
For what you will have invested in it after an electronic module, coil, cap, etc.. The Magnaspark will be WAY ahead. Way more power, modern components, and just as adjustable.

This was kind of my thought. A lot of expense for no real gain. Think I have my answer. I’ll keep the scat for a future project. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)
